Fuel Sending Unit
« on: March 24, 2024, 05:04:45 PM »
Anyone order and use one of these from EuroMotoElectrics in Denver?  Looks like the only new item available although aftermarket.  Want to be sure it works for K1100RS before ordering.

Seems crazy expensive for a red light indicator.
I just posted how I cut off the whole metal float thing and holder, so now it's just a pass through for the fuel pump wires.
My trip meter works just fine! :-)

I'm thinking about it.....but first I am giving my original 1987 unit the spa treatment in the ultrasonic bath all weekend to see if it can be saved before lashing out that kind of $$$.....

It's been in the ultrasonic cleaner for several hours over the weekend, and now looks like this. Still a work in progress.

The rust dissolver solution I am using is breaking it down, but there is sticky old gas residue in there too, which needs scraping off. However, the electric contacts are now clear of rust and I can confirm there is a good circuit to the low fuel lamps and the fuel pump, which is progress. Before cleaning there were a solid mess of rust and were probably shorting out on each other due to that.

Not finished yet, but happy with what I have achieved so far.

First job was to clean up the contacts on the float rod arm and get them shiny again. The faces that touch the wires of the fuel level sender were in good shape at least.

A few hours in the ultrasonic bath and some careful scraping got it clean, as well as some careful cotton bud work, soaked with carb cleaner. However it was still giving the same resistance reading across the whole scale, so I had to get the board off to see what was going on. A big blob of sticky fuel residue on the back was the cause. Back to the ultrasonic bath again.

Then some soaking overnight in kerosene, followed by more gentle cotton bud cleaning in the same direction as the wires run. Finally the crud started to break up...
