Throttle tube gear lube type?
« on: May 06, 2020, 11:54:07 AM »
What lubrication do you recommend for the throttle tube gears? Where the throttle tube meets the pulley that connects to the chain, that connects to the throttle cable. All of this that sits under the front brake master cylinder.

A couple of years ago, when I took mine apart for initial inspection, I cleaned out all of the old, and put in synthetic molybenum (i.e. axle) grease. It seems to have thickened up, and I think contributed to a 'stickiness' in the throttle. WD-40 or silicon spray seems inadequate. I don't think graphite powder will stay. I'm leaning towards Lithium (white-yellow) grease.

I may be banned for heresy, but perhaps Staburags is not the answer here?

And if you use Ballistol you'll get that unique smell that only it has!

Lanolin based spray called Fluid Film would work good for that application too, I'd think.

I use lithium grease on the throttle gears once or twice a season. Verify that the gear marks are aligned, that there is no significant damage to gear teeth, and that the throttle tube isn't rubbing anything. Sometimes just slightly adjusting how the throttle cable is routed over the air box is enough to improve response.
