Big Red's 25K Service
« on: July 17, 2020, 05:19:13 PM »
Well, Big Red hit 25k, so she got fresh lubricants front to back.
She also got the Ohlins shock with a blue Hypercoil from her parts bike (Late, 9/84 RT 50 state, with an 86 seat/rear).
Not much different other than maybe a bit stiffer.

Next will be to take the forks from the '86 K75 that is the parts bike to Big Red's parts bike, I believe there to be a set of Progressive springs in there as I got a box with standard springs in it. She pogo's pretty bad compared to everything else. Probably do a brake fluid change just for giggles when I do that work.

Had a interesting ride home yesterday and a learning experience....

Told a new customer that I would meet him at a gas station near my house at 6:45pm.
Normally, I can get there in about 35 min., so I thought I had 10 min. of wiggle time and, normally, we end up waiting on them...

Fortunately, my wife called just at 6pm that she was stuck in traffic on the interstate just south of me.
I pulled up the map and plotted my route. I got home 1 1/2 hrs before she did.

Without giving a weather report  :laughing4-giggles: lets just say July in Alabama is like El Paso, TX, just wetter.  :laughing4-giggles:

I jump on Big Red, Darn! the low fuel light is on, I make the right decision and get gas.
Traffic was a mess that way too as cars exited the interstate and were clogging the alternative roads.
This was the learning experience, don't go down Hwy 119, too many lights, take Hwy 31, lots fewer lights and subdivisions = fewer cars.
Just as I was getting ready to turn south on 119, waiting in traffic, the temperature light comes on. I don't hear or feel the fan running =-{
Coincidentally, this is the same spot that two years ago, half of the HES quit about the same time of year and I limped her home.

I don't know why she kept running. After another light, I got up to 40 mph in 5th and the light flickered and went off. WHEW!!!
Well, short lived as there were a couple of more lights to go, light on several minutes, before the long stretches where I can get air to it and it goes out.
I tried reaching in and turning the fan to no avail. Turned out I knocked off the lower half of the air intake manifold and lost it - will go back today and see if I can find it. I do have two others.
Made it, less than 10 min. late.

Looks like I got other parts to steal from the RT.

Fingers crossed on the photo:

No, not my typical practice. I was trying to keep the rpm's down to produce less heat.
It was relatively flat, was just moving with traffic, coasting when I could, staring at that red light.

Forgot, she got a front fork brace too. Don't know that I think it made much difference.
She really needs better brakes. That is the major difference between each bike, they get better the newer they are.

A fan bypass switch is a good addition.

OEM fan motor quality was highly variable. Most were crap, mine brushes melted 20 + years ago. I believe a 2nd hand OEM motor was around $200.00 Au at the time. I ended up fitting a fully sealed Davies Craig fan and partial DC shroud to the cut  down original shroud with an override switch. I'd never heard of Spal fans at the time, but this seems to be the popular choice these days.

I'll consider a switch while I gotta it apart.
Not too many places to put it on a naked bike, suppose I could use a dash switch, as none are used.
Believe you me, I hear the fan every ride, at least, when I stop at the garage to wait for the door to open in our summer.
Thought I would test the two parts bike fans, that's what I gotta them for.
Would really like to git the k75 going, as I've never owned one.

Even in our QLD summers I very rarely hear the fan come on, hence the switch. I used a OEM switch with the incorrect symbol which I wet and dried then polished off. The little plate with the symbol on it is removable. I glued it to the soft jaws on my vice with hot glue which was easily removed once finished. Some automotive or electronic shops have stick on sheets of switch symbols. After applying the correct symbol I painted over the top with clear lacquer to waterproof it.

The K75's are a  highly underrated bike, I have the only 75 in our growing Kluster of 8 Bricks. A few of the guys are envious of the 75 which are a lot rarer than the 100 in OZ. The 75's are a different bike than the 100 and need to be ridden differently, they need to be revved, and love it. I have had no problem keeping up with the 100's in the real world. I would  never swap mine for a bigger K.
Regards Martin.

Since being fitted they have been correctly orientated.

Thanks, but don't tempt me Snowman, I'm supposed to leave room for three cages when hail storms are forecast.
