1986 K100, No title, parked for unknown amount of time. What's the worst that could happen?

It's $450 on craigslist, I just can't bring myself to buy a nice one, I want to fix one up and bring it back from the grave.

Good idea, I'll ask him for it. I think I could talk him down to $250 with time.

I've seen a lot of Ks and never seen handlebars that rusty. Makes me wonder how rusty other parts might be.

Those side covers are K1100.

Front tire looks low.  Take an air compressor when you pick it up. Bikes roll a lot easier with air in the tires.

Could have hidden $$ issues that caused it to be parked.  Should be able to find a running one for not much more.  Then again, it's not hacked up so it may be a righteous and satisfying challenge.

Like Chaos mentioned, for a little more money you can find a running one with a valid title.

It's up to you, but personally I wouldn't waste my time with it, even for a parts bike.

Always a gamble taking on a non-runner ,ask yourself do I feel lucky. I don’t know if I’d take it if it was free unless I had the space and the same bike so I could use it for parts.

Another reason to check the Vin, is that really an 86 model, cause no way is the instrument cluster from an 86 model, so then we have no idea about the mileage being genuine. The cluster looks more like from a k1100 but the bike is a k100 2v. It's a bitza.

I'm guessing it's been someone else's parts bike, and maybe a 91 or newer cluster.

Any brick could still be a bargain, as long as your offer makes it one.

The instrument cluster could be from an '85 but the faceplates of the cluster could be from a 4V instrument. I substituted the tach faceplate from a 4V cluster I was given because the original veneer on my Brick's tach was warped and couldn't be flattened sufficiently to allow the needle to run unimpeded.

That's a possibility. Does that mean when you're riding at 80mph, you're reading over 6,000rpm, when you're actually doing 5,000? Is that so you can ride at redline more often? (quite expecting a not quite)

I read the thread posts...my input is that some of us suffer from an impulsive need to accumulate....I recall a couple were true #$%@#$..for me, then when a spectacular bargain emerges, am I $ready for that real deal?  Its a glorious thing to witness what $500 cash in hand can buy you in winter....Both pics were running $500 off Craigslist.....

I took a chance and bought 4 valve K100RS for $1k with undetermined driveline failure from another Motobricker a few months ago.

Mechanically seems like a good bike but is in fair cosmetic condition.

Finally took apart driveline and figured out problem last week.  Might have time for a test ride next week.  If not the test ride will need to wait until early next year.

K bikes don't seem worth as much as they once were.  I think I got a good deal as I have a complete K1100LT parts bike that I was rear ended on.

Me sure likes them RED bargain bikes in Livingston, WI !

That u-joint/drive shaft photo should be part of a thread on the importance of proper u-joint phasing.

I don't know if any of the previous owners had the shaft out.  Hard to tell on a bike this old.

What is left of the exploded u-joint is very tight so don't know if the root failure was the u-joint or improper phasing.

The guy that I purchased from did not mess with the driveshaft and he was the one riding it when failure occurred.

I did install the replacement phased properly.

Bike shows 36 k miles and runs great.  I hope to take it a test ride Tuesday if time and weather permits.  Otherwise it will need to wait until next month.

I wonder if a u-joint fails totally without warning, or would there have been some telltale vibrations or something? It sure looks pretty bad. I guess one would be happy the thing was inside the housing!

I was on a group ride a number of years ago when one of the group had the front joint just up and explode on him. No noise or vibration that he recalled, rolled off the throttle going down a hill, then no power and loud banging in the swingarm.
He was on a '93RS special.
As a group we were able to get the bike loaded up in a u-haul so he could get it home.
He repaired the failure and continued to ride the bike for quite a few more years before he sold it.

Otherwise known as hoarding, which is only problematic when electric power failure at night makes the path to the bathroom between the stacks of newspapers and the cardboard boxes filled with moto parts and lubricant bargains difficult to navigate.

I'm tearing down my old garage so I have 2 sets of GS tires, 1 set of HD spoke wheels, 1 set of Ceriani forks, plus a full charging system, exhaust system, and carb rubbers for a CB750 DOHC. Misc K bike electrical switches, gaskets, etc. in varied boxes too.

Normally I only have 1/2 of that in the house.
