Oil/water pump seals: my experience
« on: April 11, 2015, 03:21:19 PM »
Soooooo of the list of things I can/should do to my bike, I decided to take on replacing the oil and water pump seals. It was leaking oil since the start of this season. I ordered the parts earlier this week from the dealer and they came in yesterday.

I did searching here, did some Googling, and also used this:

http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/bvogel/K100/oil_pump/oil-pump-seals-replacement.htm

I had not opened the pump up before ordering parts, but from my research, it seemed that I wanted, or would receive, the updated water pump seal (11411741870). Therefore, I wanted to also get the new spacer (11511464902) and impeller/rotor (11411461173). From my research it seemed that I was going to have to look up these parts under a new K bike but they showed up in the dealer's computer according to my application ('87 K75C).

The K100 forum thread that I linked above has instructions for retrofitting the updated parts to old style pumps but I found that my pump had already been updated with the new stuff. I wasn't exactly going to need the new rotor and spacer but I decided to use the new parts anyway...20% return policy at any rate.

I found that using threaded rod (or a long bolt in my case) to pull the shaft through the seal worked but the instructions above say to use the old spacer and pull until the big oil pump gear is flush with the housing. I didn't have the old-old spacer so I used the old-new style spacer but it won't allow for the gear to become flush with the housing. Instead of that I used a 3/8 drive 1/2'' socket instead and cranked until flush...I used a straight edge and got it just a tiny bit inside the housing as it seemed it could rub on the engine side.

So yeah. I'm giving the RTV the afternoon to dry before refilling the coolant and topping up the oil but I think I did everything right. The seals, O rings, rotor, and spacer came out to be about $70. Add a few bucks for a can of brake clean, RTV (I used ultra black), top-up fluids, and an 8mm 1.25 thread rod or long bolt (plus nut and flat washer).

I figured I'd post this in case anyone else has the task of installing the new style seal in a pump that already has it

Put like 380 miles on the bike...coolant is dripping from the weep hole when running. F. I don't know how I screwed it up. Least I cured the oil leak
