Starter motor keeps cranking, regularly. relay?
« on: September 10, 2013, 11:10:34 AM »
I've been experiencing this issue way too often on my '93 K1100lt.
Start bike, I hear starter still cranking, I have to remove seat- lift gas tank up- lift cover up- and tap on starter relay box to get it to stop!

On one hand I heard this can happen more easily with a weak battery. But I had just rebuilt my alternator and I have a brand new battery!

Could I just need a new relay? Is it a starter relay or starter solenoid? Is there a radioshack or other cheaper part I car source besides BMW OEM?

Replace your relay.

Once it gets stuck once, the contact surfaces enjoy getting stuck again.

Yeah, grab a relay. Can't hurt to pull the starter and clean the brushes/commutator as well.

I've seen cheaper ones sourced from bosch before. Euromotoelectrics has one for 66 http://www.euromotoelectrics.com/BOSCH-Starter-Relay-BMW-K-61-31-1-459-008-p/rel-k008.htm

Take a look at your relay, and see if there are part numbers on it. Bosch or tyco will sell one similar.
