O2 sensor
« on: March 24, 2014, 01:33:14 PM »
I have been meaning to ask this for awhile now.  What does the O2 sensor do?  Is it before the cat air/fuel ratio or after the cat emissions stuff?  Does it need to be replaced since mine is 18 years old, though low mileage of 24k?
Thanks.

It is after the cat converter to monitor the effectiveness of the converter and adjust the fuel mixture based upon it's readings.

Why would you do that? Not that I doubt you have a good reason besides it being a conversation starter.

I have an aftermarket, custom fuel injection system (megasquirt) running the fuel on my K75, replacing the ancient L-Jetronic. I'm going to add in ignition control this summer (currently, it still uses the stock ignition brain under the steering  head). That's a wideband O2 sensor, that can measure accurately from 10:1 AFR to Free air, though in the current setup, it can only measure to 20:1, which is more than sufficient for tuning purposes. A normal O2 sensor only does above or below stoichiometric (14.7:1).
