That guy didn't know what he had or just wanted it gone. Looks like a great find!
-
Holy crap, for that price even I would have bought it.....
I'd bet on the clutch nut o-ring being bad. Very common now at that age.
-
The posting is gone already - what was he asking?

Easy to say - not so easy to do. Actually, I'm glad for my (almost literal) neighbor, may he find much joy and satisfaction in the restoration to health of the K1100 and ride it many miles in happiness.

Hilltopper is my welcome guest in Livingston for a test drive- so battery search shows ML22-12 and gel versions many sub $50 such as Walmart.com
Any recommendations? I got an OptimA$$ with my current ride. Worth a $100+ delta? Lighter of course
I had wanted to paraphrase Proverbs 31 which references a wife of great value who can find a bargain and substitute myself as the woman buying a field to cultivate. “ He selects a bargain K and restored it for thorough flaoging in the Chee. or was that the book of Johnnie? I did lust after his RS when we rode last summer. Wanna drag

I might just take you up on this - New Glarus is one of my favorite destinations, and is a little over 1/2 way to Livingston. I thought about suggesting meeting up in NG, but then you would get all the good roads (WI Hwy 39 and the letter county roads that branch off it).

If you want to start a restoration with a clean slate I thinks one can be had fairly cheap.

Tremendous first post, Crusty! Members will start looking to you as a parts resource.
-
Ben the Craigslist scammers might think twice! I have a stack of parts for the buyer of that bike! Welcome to the asylum sir!
-
Looking around at K bikes for a Winter project. A friend has a K75 and loves it. Need something a little different after only riding boxers for the last 10 years. I hear they are very smooth running.
-
Quite the find Clayton!
I hope to ride to Monroe this next spring/summer, would like to get together for another ride.
-
Time to take the tarp off and dig into that project. Three running rollers in the garage will be great. Yes I’d certainly enjoy visiting/ riding again. Let me know.
-
So despite the age of this thread, I posted it so I'll pick it up again. Im digging into this K11 RS project again: Clutch/Tranny done. Today I am restoring the front rotors with fresh "Johnny bobbins". Thanks Johnny.
So the inner component, that mounts to the hub and holds 1/2 of each bobbin has some deep scoring in the sockets where the PO took the bobbins waaay too far. I inserted a new bobbin in these semi circular holes and there is no slop.
So by my lexicon these are serviceable, yes? A quick search shows me my usual sources don't offer that inner ring and ABS ring seperately. (NEW is $400 each!) hack hack hack...
I'm going to assemble this first unit and then tug to see how much movement I get. I recall there is a spec for this. the right sans ABS ring lays nicely on the bench but the left with the ring not so simple...I'll lift the ring for this job, hassle yes...There's gotta be a way to compress these springs so the E clip slides on just as easily. I'll go run some errands and think on this....maybe my welder vice grips with looong fingers will compress these springs.......
If you have a pair of unmolester components in your stash, how much shipped to 53554?
Also: several of the rubber edge seals are worn through on the fairing panels. The one pictured butts to the fuel tank. Others have a U shap and have worn through where they rest against the engine etc.
Is there an alternative online source you K11 restorers like?
-
I have seen that trim sold for automobiles. Try spending some time searching stuff like auto water seal, edge seal, edge trim, door seal, etc. I'm pretty sure that stuff is a stock part.
-
This is a sample of what is available. Just a question of getting the dimensions. Some of it is kind of pricey, but maybe a couple of us could make a group purchase.

Happy New Year Griph:
So all 24 bobbins are identical...the OEM sources have 3 of 12 with a spring of some sort. Methinks my Johnny source had the hot ticket with maybe harder steel bobbins?? What's the OEM function of the diffrent bobbins spaced around the ring? Just Curious....
-
I seem to recall that the bobbins with the rings were intended to dampen any rattling of the rotor. I guess that the regular bobbins can't hold it in place securely enough. The idea is that there is little or no radial play in the rotor attachment, but a little runout play is designed in.
My first 16V RS didn't have the bobbins with the rings, and the rotors made a jingly, rattling sound going down the road. The rotors have to be able to float side to side a tiny bit to prevent brake pulsing, but if they are not damped with a little bit of friction they rattle.
-
.
Back in 2019 I made inquries. The parts were sourced from Motobins. Each Bobbin has an oversized spring washer. Super results. I believe the bobbins are stainless steel.
-
If they're stainless, I would keep an eye on wear in the cutouts the bobbins go in. The originals were aluminum so they wore rather than the rotor or the carrier, making them the wear part of the assembly.
-
point taken on the wear points for the bobbins. I might not have my facts straight on the materials. Johnny has been running these a few years- Yo Audiology man, you out there? Reviews at Motobins were positive....NTL, stainless is harder than aluminum... Pray
Gryph thanks ever so kindly for scouting that edging. I want to verify the diameter of the trashed components as I think the diameter of the foam insulator tube is bigger on the worn out edging.... I'd hate to drop that much money and discover it doesn't touch the fuel tank. Then again the red paint is rubbed off from this current OEM stuff so perhaps a smaller diameter that DOESN't ride against the fuel tank would be better.... :idunno:
Also: I have a K1 runner stashed that will come apart in February for my third K clutch...it will probably require something similar...
In my day job...errrr.....early morning and late afternoon job I drive a school bus....the company is owned by an auto body shop. At tonight's holiday feast I'll bring along pics and sizing and talk to the part's guy about what they stock. If I can supply extra Gryph, I will. Cheers.
-
You selected very well Gryph, the specs match up. I'll be in touch after I sleep off the party. Cheers.
-
Lucky guess on my part. You might try looking for a smaller quantity to get a lower price. I saw it on some U.K. websites for about 10 bucks a meter.
I would think you could start a thread here to sell some to the inmates. MaxBMW shows it as NLA on the parts lists and I know that I've had to replace a bunch of it on my bikes.
-
gotcha....I'll research a wholesale buy tonight.
