Flying Brickers and enthusiasts, your posts have inspired me to venture into customizing a 1988 K75. I admire the vast knowledge available on this site and eagerness of the members to help a fellow bricker. Please checkout my site and post recommendations, suggestions to make this living legend unique.

I'll copy the photos and progress here this week for the ease of comments.

That's a pretty tall order to build a 'unique living legend'. There's a lot of incredible bikes out there. You must start with a vision of your own, a clear picture of the finished product. Do you have the skills?
-
Thank you guys for responding. I do not have ton of skills but there is a vision. I have uploaded my rendering. Progress pics coming soon.

Welcome, prakash!
How many miles were on the odometer of this bike when you purchased it?
-
Good Evening Laitch !! The bike had 88k miles when I got it. I am the proud second owner.
-
Original Bike before I bought it.

Day I got it home. Some day in May 2016. The beauty sits in the garage.

Good evening Johnny, fork brace is in the wish list.

Nice. :2thumbup: Looking forward to the build!

You already have a fork brace,if my eyes don't decieve me.That black thing between the two parts to the front mudguard. What you need is fork gaiters, maybe?
Not many serving bricks around now.Standard is almost unique.

+1
Put Rancho hot pink fork gaiters on the shopping list, prakash, as the Dude suggests.
-
Leaving your swingarm hanging like that will trash the all-important boot that protects front U-joint and splines.
-
Sept 26 2016: Life became busy and K75 was on its way to Phoenix Cycle Shop (http://www.phoenixcycleshop.com) in Westbrook Maine to complete the build.
-
Nov 16 2016: Engine and Transmission put back on frame by Phoenix Cycle Shop to do a mechanical evaluation.

Nov 16 2016: Worn out Final Drive Splines. Very typical of K bikes from the era. Poor engineering on the rear axle by BMW.
-
Nov 16 2016: After initial evaluation of the bike, following needs to be done to bring it to a mechanically perfect condition:
1. Real Axle/Final Drive splines will be rebuilt or replaced.
2. Loss of pressure in the engine cylinders. Bike will have to undergo top end engine work.
3. All seals, gaskets, wear and tear items will be replaced.
4. Front suspension will be rebuilt and shortened.
5. Front disc rear drum brake will be rebuilt.
Dec 2 2016: Final drive sent to Hansens BMW in OR for rebuilt. Hanesns will also provide a brand new drive shaft as part of the package deal. In the mean time guys from Phoenix Cycle, Dave and Steve continue to rebuild the engine.
-
Dec 20 2016
This is first draft rendering from Phoenix Cycle Shop. Bike is lowered, stance looks terrific. Love the exhaust.

Engine tear down and clean up work is underway. Piston rings and gaskets have arrived from the UK. No significant damage discovered, regular wear and tear.
Final drive has been rebuilt by Hansens BMW, shipped and installed.

Customization begins. More images to follow.

Just curious, what was the cost of the engine work? How did the rebuilder handle the carbide cylinder lining? Were they just able to run a conventional cylinder hone through the bore?
-
You know what? In the future this may be someone's version of a vision.
You can finance an engine rebuild with the sale of the plastics...
What an odd arrangement. Post your pieces up for sale.
Don in Nipomo.. out on the farm roads after last nights rain.

:hehehe LOL did not realize there will be so much interest in the plastics. I will post whatever is left after the bike is built. Stay tuned buddy.
-
How much did it cost for Hansens to rebuild the final drive?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It was 1090+ shipping.

Parts are on their way to get powder coated. Cannot wait to see them all nice and clean before final round of customization begins. I will post images once I get them back.

Seats were ordered on 3/18, scheduled to be delivered first week of April some time. It should be fairly simple bolt on after chopping the rear frame.

Two possible outcomes, either it works or it does not. If it works, good for me. If it does not, I will make it to work. Let's see how it goes. Thank you for the heads up.
-
It'll work great. Get yourself an MSD 8918 for the tach and you can always use the supplied magnets for the speedo if a brotbox or tgpi 4.0 isn't purchased.

I'm also interested in the answer to Gryphs question.
Regards Martin.

Engine rebuild just labor was 517 USD. Parts extra. I have emailed about the carbide query to the builder, will update once I have an answer.
-
Cylinder walls did not have any wear, it was only resurfaced with a 68mm hone.

I've got the same acewell tach and I'm having a bit of trouble with it. Im not quite done with it yet tho so we'll see how it turns out

Thank you topfueltrav. I am waiting for the acewell to ship and the fun begins after that. I'm glad I'm not the only one in this forum who will be installing this unit.

Parts are back after powder coating. Got engine covers accented and wheels pinstriped by myself. It did not come out as expected, but overall quite satisfied with results.

Thank you all for appreciating the work. There as been a lot of progress since my last post. Phoenix cycle has done an amazing job bringing all the pieces together. As it stands now, all parts in including speedometer, seats and lights are in. Front of the bike lowered by almost 2 inches. Did not like the pin stripe on the wheels, left the wheels all powdered coated satin black. Tires are installed. Engine and exhaust fully assembled.
Customization begins next to enhance aesthetics.

Looking good! Which bars are those, and are they 22mm? I am looking for a set with similar height / pull back..
Flanders BMW sidecar bars might be what you're after.
-
Yes... I'm currently "torn" between the Flanders B20 Sidecar bars and the A20 Euro bars..
I wish they had better pictures, mainly the side view of each showing how much the bars angle up/down at the grip section. I can tell the sidecar bars have less pull back, but they also look flatter, I'm wondering if the A20 might angle down slightly based on the perspective the top view photo is showing.

May 10th 2017: Seat loop in, the frame will sit inside of the seat and hang down about 3/4 inch. This is where the rear lights will attach. Fabrication is almost done. Will be sending over to paint next week. More pics coming in.

Progress has been slow lately. All parts are back from paint. The last remaining ones ordered are gasket for gas cap and gear lever. Past weekend refurbished handle bar controls which looked pretty dated after almost 30 years of service.

Wow they look brand new - how did you do that?
-
@Filmcamera, it took almost a week because of multi colored switches. Most of the time taken was for paint to dry. Did not remove any switches, sanding, masking, rattle can spray throughout followed by clear and rubbing compound to top it off.
-
Wow!!!
-
Prakash, that switch gear renovation is a labour of love!
I rubbed mine with "vim and vigour"and the milkiness of the plastic surfaces rubbed away revealing original brightness.Took about ten minutes ,no where near as loving as you're effort. :popcorm

I'm selling some of the leftover parts which was not used in custom build. The items are posted on eBay. Fellow brickers please feel free to ask for more photographs if needed.

Maybe he can compare jokes with the guy who is going to appraise the cover.
Frankly, all the excitement is making me hungry. :popcorm

I am glad it is causing such an excitement. Oh by the way the cover is hand woven out of carbon fiber and has been custom painted to match the brick. It has been appraised too, highest bidder for the bike on eBay will get the ultralight <1lb fantastic space age cover. Hold your horns and stay tuned. Great grand reveal is just couple of days from today.

Be still my beating heart! It's gotten a ribbon, too! Or is that the price tag? If it's a ribbon, the glistening switch assemblies probably clinched that. It looks like it might be a user instead of a poser. Congratulations, prakash.
Did you accommodate water drainage from around the fuel tank cap when you reversed it? Living in the mountains, I'm preoccupied with controlling runoff and it seems to be soaking into all other interests in my life. :giggles
I hope you'll include closeup side profile photos, too.
Hey! Are you at Owl's Head?
-
Thank you and I am glad you like it. Purple ribbon was to ID exhibitor and nothing else. I hope they judged the event. The show was fun, we were there just for one day. Bunch of great bikes to pick ideas from for next year. By the way, we had to drill a hole on the base for the water drainage. I will upload close up photos/videos later this week.

Do you happen to have the rubber bump stop that attaches to the original muffler?
Don in Nipomo
-
Not yet. There are some rough spots on the plastic which needs attention. Also the aluminum covers will need some polishing. I do have the rubber bump and I think it is still attached to the muffler.
-
Damn, with the paint and other finishing touches your custom brick has really come together. Nice job! :2thumbup:

Would you be interested in separating it from the muffler and mailing it to me for a reasonable price?
My 87 needs one...

Don, the rubber is in great condition. I will try to take it out tomorrow. If I am successful removing it in one piece, I will mail it to you. You don't have to pay anything.

Thank you. The bike runs fantastic after the overhaul. Still few more cosmetic touches pending to call it all complete.
-
Be sure to lube up the tits on the sidestand bumper before you remove it. Dish soap works good. If you don't, you will tear the tits off. I found out the hard way. Expensive mistake...

I have changed my mind. I'll keep it and ride it. This thing turned out amazing and rides like a breeze. My next project is a Ducati Monster 750. I plan to fully customize and see if I don't like it enough to flip :) Thank you for showing interest.

Guys I still feel having a front fender will enhance the aesthetics, I'm trying to stay away from the OEM. Any recommendations on a aftermarket short style fender which may fit?

This is the only front fender that I've come across for aftermarket part.
https://www.unitgarage.com/front_fender_matt_black
Majority of the time, builders will simply trim down the OEM fender to their liking. That's what I did since it's the cheapest option. Good luck!

Thank you for posting the link. I looked at it, looks great. I started cutting the OEM this weekend, trying something unique. If the project falls apart, unitgarage is the way to go.
Following are some photos of the ongoing job. Plan is to get this on the bike by end of next week.

Rear wheel hub, drive shaft cover and portion of engine covers was not powder coated as part of the build. Gave a thorough clean using oven cleaner this morning. Outcome was quite satisfying.

Did you make the bracket for the license plate or purchased it?

eBay-ed it then powder coated. Ghosted the K75 badge on it too.
I think this was the one.

That looks great. What's the trick with the oven cleaner. I've heard good and bad things about it. Some say it turns the alloy grey but yours looks good :2thumbup: .

Depends on the moderator I guess. I used the Easy Off Fume Free cleaner from Walmart. It was around 5 bucks. Applied to smaller areas, waited for 10 to 12 minutes, made sure the area is wet, then rubbed the crap using scotchbrite. Repeated it 3 to 4 times.
This video was my inspiration and followed what he did with oven cleaner:

The oven cleaner looks like it might be worth a try.

Great build and an inspiration. What headlight did you use? It looks exactly what I'm looking for. I'm debating on using used OEM of any brand VS Chinese eBay.

Thank you my friend. This is the one I have used. Don't think this is Chinese. These guys are based out of CA.

Fellow Brickers, my next project is swapping headlight of my custom K75 with a standard 7" angel eye type. I have been searching for a non cheapo option with DRL, not having any luck. Any suggestion will be appreciated?

There aren't shinier oem combo switches anywhere in the K-universe! Good luck with your next project.

I wonder if it's behind a shed yet.
