Hey guys,
Thought I'd start a thread as I build my 1991 K100RS to fit into the more modern era and my personal style. Picked it up as a 2 owner RS with ~47000 miles on it, and LT fairings fit to it somewhere along the way. I stripped the fairings off to find everything from mouse nests to hornet nests hiding under them. The plan is to go with a more modern naked bike look with hand made fairings. My inspirations are bikes like LaDini, Mike Flores K100, "The Hornet", and similar bikes. I plan on keeping as many parts during the build BMW as I can, and therefore am converting the front forks to a S1000RR setup which I already have. I plan to retain the original throttle tube and right hand controls as well as the heated grips. I am planning modifying the K100 throttle body to adapt to the 2 cable throttle tube (being an engineer and having a machine shop at your disposal can cause me to make projects more challenging than that need to be). I am removing the stock ABS, and I plan at this point to use a motogadget gauge, so the wiring should be fun to figure out. So far this is where she is at!

I personally couldn’t chop that bike, especially in shot number two, that’s where I’d have put the spanner’s down.

The bike exactly what I was looking for, right year, model, engine, and pretty worked over already with non RS parts for the right price. I do love the original bikes too, but have been looking to complete a build like this for a few years now, and knew a BMW would be the platform I would use.

Yeah the forks are from a S1000RR. I bought them with all the controls and brakes. The goal is to make the bike out of as many stock BMW parts as possible, such as retaining the S1000RR push/pull throttle, stock heated grips, etc. I have been pretty busy lately, but when I get spare moments I have been researching and putting together my wiring diagram and parts list. I am currently reading Ron Fournier's sheet metal books, as I plan to do all my own sheet metal work as well. Hopefully later in the winter I will have some body work on the frame and a semi mocked up body shape! Then I can really start updating the thread.

In your research, have you found people using active suspension forks?
I have not found anyone using them. That really gets complicated with the CANBUS system of the S1000RR. A lot of guys using them are just using the forks and retaining the stock K100 controls, or using controls off Ducati and Kawasaki bikes. I don't mind manually adjusting the suspension, as I have done plenty of it when I worked on my ATV long travel suspension.

I found a greatly priced S1000R forks set from a 2014 bike but want to find out, are forks same for S1000RR and S1000R?

I have not really made as much progress as I'd like, other things keep getting in the way of the project. As for the front forks, I believe the S1000RR and S1000R are the same length from what I found doing research. If you go onto AllBallsRacing.com you can look at front end bearing kits and order them for whatever forks you are planning on using. Right now I am working on figuring out the rear suspension, as I am going to make a billet aluminum subframe so I am going to go to a mono shock setup in the center of the frame.

They are painted pearl white. Based on the mirror cap that fell off when my dad was taking it for a ride before I tore it down, that is not the original color thought. When taking the fairings off, I did find a few spots where they had been jb welded because they were cracked, which I would guess whoever installed the LT fairings onto the RS bike did to try to fix them before they were installed.

That pearl white is a nice color. Add a little pin-striping in dark blue and you have a really good looking ride. Classic Beemer.

Nothing that a chopped loop and an Motogarotte can't fix.

The pearl white is for sure staying. That is going to be the base tank/body color of the build I love it. I plan to add some blue and red and a black undertone to it as well (give it a little M coloring)

I know not everyone agrees with modifying a running bike. But aseptically I love the lines of K's, and it has a amazing platform for what I am trying to do. The bike needed plenty of love anyways, I ran into hornet and mouse nests once the fairings and airbox were off.

Viewing them from a sterile field must give them that certain je ne sais quoi. :bmwsmile
