Hello all, I just bought a 1984 K100, 32,000 original km's. I took it out for a ride and noticed a few drops of oil from the rear weep hole, the next ride there was a small puddle of fresh engine oil under the center stand. Looks like a rear main seal or clutch o-ring problem.
I Ordered all of the necessary parts and will be replacing the rear main seal in the next few days. I am not that unhappy, I look at this as an opportunity to get to know the bike and will fix any other issues as I work my way to the seal. The bike sat unused for 2 years and that is probably why the seal failed. It came with a full service record all done by BMW mechanics. I added up the service biils and it came to over $6,000 Canadian for the first 32,000 km!
I have been riding bikes for 37 years now and have always done my own maintenance, (BMW mechanics will not be pleased). I intend to convert it to a scrambler style bike. I really like the stripped down rugged look.
I am happy to join this forum and look forward to any help any of you can give me. I have already done a lot of searching and have found some excellent advice on how to fix the oil leak.

Welcome to the pleasuredome. For an amateur grease monkey there is no finer forum. Also check out the Chris Harris YouTube videos. Very useful indeed.
You will find the K to be a well put together machine. Sometimes too well put together.

Way ahead of you there, Grant. We've been offering the more succulent parts for generations; furthermore, maple syrup was invented here. :giggles

Welcome from the other side of the country (almost). Nice-looking bike. Mine is the same colour...it's a little odd but whatever. I think you'll find your bike will love you for taking her out at every opportunity. Mine sat for 9 years and didn't want to start. After I got her running she felt a little rough and simply got better with every outing. I think we all know machines don't like to sit (or shouldn't....just like humans!). You will be amazed at the quality of the parts that went into these bikes. They are not perfect but they are reliable workhorses and kinda quirky. Mine is happiest on the highway around 4500 to 5000 rpm (plus, if you want). I call her my "highway queen".
Good luck with the repairs. I'm sure you've been "spline advised" to death already but, if not, give them a good cleaning and a proper lubing with good moly grease.

Harmless banter, not a problem. I have all of the parts and the expensive lube. I will start wrenching this weekend, I want to take my time and fix any problems on my way to the main seal. My goal is to get it mechanically sound before I get into any modifications.
