K 1100 RS & Engine protection (crash) bars ???

Hello everybody!

I am considering exchanging my K 100 LT for a K 1100 RS. Beside wider touring type steering, I am considering installing the crash bars too. Has anyone tried this? Any pictures of K 1100 RS with such bars installed?

Thanks - I just wanted to know if yomeone has tried it with K1100RS too, as its fairing is shaped differently (and installing crash bars would includie drilling holes in the fairing)

"Crash bars" is not really a fitting description.. Any, and from experience I mean ANY, forward momentum when the bike goes over, and the bars will easily break away from either the upper, lower, or both mounts.


Easier to fix scratches in the fairing than the ripped out slot the broken loose bar could likely cause..


I rarely see them installed and always assumed they were actually "Center Stand Training Bars" that got removed once throwing the bike up confidently on the CS became second nature.  :dunno2:

+100    I'll never put them on my bike again.

Anything other than a straight, standing still tip over and the "crash" bars(major misnomer) will break away, AND rip out a big chunk of the lower fairing.  In my experience, they just increase the damage and cost of repair substantially over not having them.

Even if the bike falls over gently they will break away.  The damn break away mounts will then need to be replaced at BMW's stupid price of $120+ per side.  Not to mention the destroyed fairing panel that will cost at least a couple hundred to replace and repaint.

...And they don't make it any easier to pick up the bike.

WHat about frame sliders? Has anyone installed them? They do help save damage to the bike in case of a low side or other drop.

I've considered sliders, but there is nowhere to attach them where they will afford any protection.  You just need to resign yourself to broken mirrors, fairings and tragkorbs.
