Title: What Other Non K Bikes Do You Ride?
Post by: Snowman on August 02, 2017, 06:22:47 PM
Yes, I know it is a K forum, but what other non K bikes are we riding and why. I'll start by saying I recently got a Goldwing as my wife has started coming along on my longer rides and we needed the comfort. Also a CRF250 for bumming around the woods on. The new R1200RS is a bike I lust after.

In addition to the '94 K75 I ride a'74 Vespa Rally 200, '74 Yamaha TX750, or '09 Vespa 250 Super.  Each one has a unique "personality" that in part determines when and what I ride.  If I'm going any distance on highways with 65+ MPH speed limits, it's usually one of the 750s.  Around town on my own it's the Rally 200 (although I've ridden it cross country twice in the Scooter Cannonball) or if my wife is going, it's the 250 Super which she prefers.  Oddly, the longest trips so far have been on both scooters, but I hope that changes soon.

sounds like you need to update the list in your sig line...it doesn't match....

my other is an S1300S.   BMW calls it a "K1300S", but it aint got a brick motor.. it has slant 4 like the S1000 series, so i refer to it as an "S".
why do i ride that one too?  because it is awesome way to chew up miles...  no where near the personality of the k75s', but dang it does a lot of stuff well.

My other bike is a 2003 Cannondale F400 with a Headshok and a flex-fuel system that uses both gravity and café cubano.

I "graduated" to a K from an Airhead, 1983 R65. Still keep the R of course, sweet bike.

In Thailand I own a Honda CB500X for purely practical reasons.

Since I haven't fixed my K yet, I ride all the non-K bikes...

My main ride is an R1100RS.

Other than that, Yamaha FJ1200, although I am trying to fix one and sell another.

Also, Kawasaki EX500 and XJ550, but those are now ridden by my wife.

Yes, I have a slight bike hoarding issue.  :riding:

Like mlytle stated above, so despite whatever is stamped on the side, my K1200GT ain't no motobrick.

The 1200GT is great for going fast on long trips.  The K75 is almost perfect for getting around the snarled traffic mess that is Los Angeles and SoCal in general.

A Moto Guzzi V7 Racer.  I like the K75 a whole lot better.  The Guzzi is like an Italian woman - beautiful, memorable to ride, temperamental and expensive to keep up.  The BMW is like a good Bavarian woman - strong, reliable, easy on the budget. :yes

My other ride, you didn't have to register in QLD under a certain horsepower 2.5 HP I think.  They have since revised the law and petrol powered cycles are now banned. It would be too hard to get it registered and too expensive. Took me about 12 months to piece it together out of bits and pieces, including pieces out of an air rifle, a washing machine,  a rotary hoe supplied 150cc Villiers. At the moment a couple of mates are trying to get me to sell it, But I am not to sure I want to.

That's nifty.  Did you build the frame?
Title: Re: What Other None K Bikes Do You Ride?
Post by: Martin on August 04, 2017, 04:10:01 PM

Thanks J I didn't totally make the frame, I chopped sleeved and lengthened a bicycle frame. Everything else was virtually handmade, I  made a tank and engine out of cardboard in order to get everything lined up. Rear drive pulley was originally a double pulley,  I had to machine it down in order to get it to align with the custom middle double idler pulley, which had to align with the machined down engine pulley. Tension quadrant is a cut down gear out of a washing machine. I achieved virtually perfect belt alignment front to rear, I had lot of fun and headaches building it. I have a few mates urging me to go into limited production. however the engine was an extremely lucky find.
Regards Martin.

I recently took a proper ride on my friend's 2016 S1000RR. Wow, just wow. Totally amazing technology, stability, speed, brakes, etc.  Behind it is one of four V11 Moto Guzzis currently in the garage.

I just got this green V11 Sport running today. Bought it cheaply a few months ago with a leaky transmission and it was running very poorly. So it's been in pieces for a while. She just needs a little more love, then I have to decide which two of the Guzzis will get sold to fund my next adventure bike.

Scud,

Nice collection, I had a 200 v11 Sports. Very nice machines, after they are sorted.

BTW, I did get a set of BMW tags for the K75S, but not without a bit of drama.

Thanks again for the offer of the bag mounts.

2004 Kawasaki Concours  1000 cc   approx. 59,000 KM or 25,000 miles  - she was my first bike purchase after having been off motorcycles for 35 years - she was in great shape at 38,000 KM, when I bought her - she is good looking, imho - she is lifelong reliable - WOW, Kawi makes a great bike! - this model was manufactured for 20 years in this format - solid, solid performer - she is a 4 cylinder symphony, truly - gorgeous engine, smooth shifting, comfortable - that answers the "why I ride her"

2007 Moto Guzzi Breva 1100 cc - approx. 39,000 KM - she is my "drop dead gorgeous" Italian girlfriend - as I've said somewhere else here, she is industrial art! - I've had her about 3.5 months - so far, so good - the guy I bought her from has 5 Guzzis and has been riding them for decades - this bike has a solid reputation for reliability - her engine is a big twin thumper, loads of torque - she rolls side to side at idle, just like they say! - then happily spins at higher revs down the highway - and handling!! very tight, predictable suspension...rock solid - she is a naked bike, which I wanted for hot weather riding - and I was drawn to the engine layout, just like I was drawn to the quirky brick engine -

As you multi-bike, multi-brand owners know they all have different personalities. This is why we ride and collect these machines!

It appears that there's a theme here with Guzzi's occupying space next to Bricks in the garage.  My wife's Suzuki GZ250 gets ridden by me occasionally now that she's lost interest in getting her MC endorsement.  I'd like to sell it and park something else next to my K but can't decide what that should be.  Perhaps I should be like the rest of the cool kids and look at a Guzzi 😎.  Too many good choices out there!

A see a similar pattern in the two Moto Guzzi forums that I participate in. You should try to get a ride on a Guzzi. There are sporty ones, cruisers, and adventure-bike models.

I mainly ride my 2009 Victory Vegas.  And for kicks a Goped GSR Cruiser when camping or at the lake.  I recently adjusted the suspension on the Vegas so that it is appropriately firm (turns out it was on the softest setting) and it now handles like a new bike.  I have a hard time justifying the insurance and upkeep costs of having two motorcycles, but have a harder time getting rid of one.

As with some others, I seem to have a hoarding problem.
I own 2 HD type bikes, a 77 FXS Low Rider and a 2002 rigid frame bobber (which my son will get some day). Neither have been ridden in 3 years I'd guess, but I start them now and then. I have possession of my late father's 81 Sportster, it belongs to mom technically but I plan to refresh it so my nephew can have it some day.

I ride regularly:
KTM 1190 adv
R1200 GS (2009 and for sale)
KLR 650
Just took out the 85 K100RT yesterday for the first time in a couple of months. I enjoy it but I don't enjoy baking and haven't had time to insulate under the fairing better.

I bought the brick as a winter project, got it to run and rode it 50 miles give or take and now it doesn't wan to start and keep running. Therefore my frustration is high, when I can throw a leg over and ride away on other bikes. It loos like it's going to become a multiple winter project.

I have only done a short ride on it so far but wow.  Feels featherlight compared to my brick and the steering is a dream.  The three cylinder engine has tons of torque at almost anywhere in the rev range.  It is too tall for me, 32.4 inch seat height and I am five six but it is easy enough to get used to.  Seems quite comfortable but being a naked bike I imagine the wind at high speeds must be something of an issue.

I did try!

Actually it is not THAT bad - I got to 110 mph and if anything it feels good, the wind pushes against your chest enough to relieve some of the pressure on your wrists.

Meanwhile the bike is crazy fast, it goes from 30 to 70 in the blink of an eye....

That black 08 is actually my previous FJR.  I now have a 2014 ES model just the picture was too big to load on the website.  I love the cruise and the ES suspenders.  I was shopping for a 2016 but came across the 14 at such a deal I couldn't pass it up.  Came with a car load of accessories and half price of new with 2800 miles on the ODO.

I changed the battery on my brick and now it runs like crap.  If I can get it figured out it is probably going on the market.  Never had any problems with my earlier bricks and just don't have time to babysit a 23 year old bike anymore.  The Yamaha's have just been so reliable and trouble free.  I would rather ride than wrench.

Thank you!!! Nah, it was one of my eBay finds, but it wasn’t far. Only like an hour south of the PA border. Guy has a bunch of bikes and just didn’t need another project. It runs greats just needs some little things like a speedometer and desperately a horn that can be heard over the engine and through car doors. The wimpy one can hardly be heard over a small conversation. Which is scary. Could’ve used it today in buffalo when some old lady backed out without seeing me and I ended up locking the rear brakes [emoji849]

Funny story, was riding it on the 190 S and ended up dying on me. After getting it towed home and taken apart, found some scoring in the cylinder so had it machined out like .5mm and got a new piston for it. Long annoying process but it works again, and well at that. Sill needs some breaking in, but it’s so much fun. Vibratey as hell, slow as hell, but so pretty and fun.

I also ride the wife's G650GS when I'm not on the K75S or R1200GS. The "Bumblebee." I just don't think she's ever going to ride that thing. It's somewhat fun to ride, but when I lose my teeth I think I'll need super ploygrip to keep my dentures in. That thing vibrates like crazy. Makes my ass numb.

My daily rider is a 1982 Nighthawk 650.  Once I get my K75 running the NH will be my hot weather bike and my K will be my distance and cold weather bike.  Unless I sell one and start another project.

Sure! You’re welcome to bring it over and check it out, of course once he weather stops being annoyingly bipolar. I ended up buying a 6v horn and it just doesn’t cut it. If the 12v one doesn’t then maybe I’ll have to get creative. I can live without mirrors, turn signals, abs... but a horn I’d kinda really like to have.

Well, I have a few different bikes. The K is the most modern and the only E start I've ever owned.

Here's  three....

1970 Lightning, owned since 1988

1956 Zundapp KS601EL Craigslist find. Disassembled and stored from 64 until 2011, when I adopted it.
Everything was labeled with pencil on marking tape in twist tied baggies. 18 month project.

1960 Greeves  Scottish/Hawkstone with a 1974 Velorex 560
Solid and dependable  340lb. BLM and Forest Service Road rig. CA licensed and registered.

I'd  better check and make sure this all sticks before I continue....  :bmwsmile

What baffles me is how somebody can put together a bike like that Zundapp from parts in baggies, but can't post a photo without having a meltdown.

Nice work on the bikes. You persisted until you posted two of them here. Keep trying until you get that Greeves posted. :2thumbup:

Me Vulcan.
Looks good, feels good, sounds good.
Single pin crank for that unbalanced sound.
Reliable, low maintenance.

After a few years of cruising I thought, I don't have to pay $500 a year to ride when I can go historic rego for under $100
I got a brick on the road, advertised the Vulcan for sale, and took it for one last ride. Then I spent the longest weekend hoping that nobody would answer the add, then I pulled the add out. That last ride was  mistake, I think.

I think the XT500 was arguably the first adventure bike.  A friend bought one of the first ones, made some modifications and put 90,000+ miles on it in 3 years of wandering around North America.  He took that bike to 49 states, most of the Canadian provinces, riding as far north as Prudhoe Bay and as far south as Venezuela.  He was one of the first bikes to make it to Prudhoe from the lower 48.  Outside of regular maintenance he never touched the engine in over 125,000 miles.

A Yamaha factory rep swapped a new 750 Virago for his bike at Daytona in 1981.  They supposedly wanted to see what kind of wear it had in the 4 years he rode it.

A great bike.

I've been thinking that, if I were to get a new bike, it would be either an Indian Scout Bobber or the new Indian FTR 1200. Both would make nice short/commute rides, when compared to the tour-ability of the K.

I got to test-ride a Bobber while on a work trip to Florida. There happened to be a big biker event going on in Panama City Beach, so naturally HD and Inidan had their mobile "dealership-in-a-trailer" and test bikes present. The Bobber was fairly grunty on torque (no surprise in the cruiser world) but what did surprise me was the ~8300 RPM rev limit, and the solid power curve all the way up the revs. Sadly, the FTRs on display were prototypes, and there weren't any demo machines. Might be able to find one at a dealership when I get back home from Qatar.

Damn!! So that explains my temples and the patches in my beard these past few years!  Could have used the warning, guys.

Also,  I accidently became a pirate recently trading my TW200 for a XL1200S.  Needs a new seat, better shocks, quieter mufflers and I don't think the balance/handling will ever be as good as a K, but I kinda see why they like 'em for these american roads.  You feel like you're going fast while doing the speed limit, or taking turns at the suggested speed.    Gotta go twice as fast around the bend for my K bikes to give an equivalent pucker.

Not sure if I am gonna keep it and do the mods, or sell it for cash to get my K75 back rolling.

The FJR is a great touring bike, I just did 1600 miles in AZ and Utah on a rental FJR. Second time i have rented one. Easy to ride, feels lighter then it is, quick. Only thing I did not like was the stock seat, it started to hurt after only a couple of hours. My K75S seems like more fun to ride, but I am not sure I could ride 1600 miles over 7 days like I did on the FJR.

Confession time.  In early August I bought one of those BMWs with the weird engine-  a 1998 R1100RS.

When the shifter grub screw backed out on my K75S, I knew it would be a while before I could tear it down.  In the meantime, I was rideless.
That made me moto-thirsty.

The idea made sense that if I’m going to fool around with 20+ year old motorcycles, I’d better have at least two of them in order to have one to ride.

I was also accepting that I might like something a little better suited to long rides than the K75S after all.   An RT/LT model BMW was the obvious choice, but an RS would be a step in the right direction and save some weight over a full blown RT/LT.

Why an R?  A boxer came about because I found one super cheap but wasn’t quick enough to grab it.  That got me started on wanting one for no other reason than I’d never had a boxer.

So that’s how it happened that I am now riding a non-brick.

It gets worse.
A friend introduced me to a local “Pullstart Racing League”: a monthly semi-underground minibike race held in the parking lot of a bar.   I knew what would happen if I went, and I was correct.
I am now fixing up my 1974 Rupp.
I guess that’s another non-brick I’ll be riding.

When I was considering a moto, if my neighbor had visited me with one of those instead of the K75 I might have one now. I like the looks of them and their quiet ride. One is used as an escort in bicycle races around here. It's swift and unobtrusive as it makes its rounds. The five-speed R1100RS apparently is not subject to the same degree of transmission input spline wear that some of the six-speed models can develop based on how they're ridden.

Good luck with it.

My thoughts, except the 30 yr old K has proved MUCH more dependable than the newer Russian R-bike imitation.  So far I've not been without and I can ride year round in the snow and slush.

When I got my Oilhead in August, the lack of dive at the first stop was whack as hell.  Whack.  I think I was used to it by the time I got home, however, and rarely think about it now.  I have to fix my K yet, so when I do, I wonder if I’ll forget and freak at the first stop when it dives.

That’s a stylish tank on the mini yee-haw.

Some local guys have started an underground minibike racing league in a bar parking lot on Sunday mornings.  Courses are laid out around cars left behind from the night before.  That’s the impetus behind getting the ol’ Rupp back in action.
I’ve only gone a couple of times, but have seen some neat old mini bikes drug out from behind the garage and brought back to life.

My father-in-law's 1971 Yamaha 175 enduro wouldn't start for the first time after 38 years of use since he bought it new, so he gave it to me.  I put a condenser in it and kept enjoying it in all it's un-modified minty-ness (even has original tires) He replaced it with a new (09) Honda Rebel 250.  Before he died, he asked me and his son which of us wanted the Rebel, and which wanted his 94 Corvette (automatic, perpetually dead batteries) and I quickly said "the bike!"  He was 5'9" and I'm 6' and it's just a little small for me, but I love riding a slow bike fast so I made a bobber thing out of it using some fabricated parts, some ebay junk, and a Blue Collar Bobbers fender kit.   It's a blast to ride and I think it looks sharp.  I don't know it's future once my K100 is on the road, but I do really enjoy it on my daily commute and exploring backroads.  I don't have a picture of the Yamaha on this computer, but it's identical to the one in the ad.

Just brought it home today, to add to my very slowly growing stable.

Heck, at this rate I'll have 4 bikes when I turn 100!

Now I need to get to wrenching on the new (to me) bike.

Just added a carbon fiber wonderbike to my fleet, big step up from the gravel grinder on the left.  Paid more for it than my first new car (72 Spitfire) Worth every penny!

I guess you can see hanging from the ceiling in my garage -- a Giant carbon fibrer mountain bike that I've had for 25 years and like Chaos' cost more than my first car (a '62 Falcon) and a Kestrel Talon that was even more (and either one cost more than my new motorbike!!)

This is my newest addition to the stable, 2009 Suzuki dr650se.  This one was modified (very common on these bikes) with an aftermarket carburetor, airbox and exhaust, a very loud exhaust.  But I almost immediately put it back to stock. How people tolerate 96+ db from the exhaust, i don't know.  Now it just purrs quietly and the stock carbie returns well over 50 miles per gallon of regular petrol.  Fun bike.

I figure this is the last of the fleet. Had to get rid of many projects and previous rebuilds. It was tough at first, but I’ll tell anyone in that situation, it’s actually a relief after they are gone. Hoping to keep these as long as possible.......

It's an '86. I've put around ~10k on it, which puts it at a whopping 34,000. I got the K because I'm 6'4 and riding a race bike is a masochist exercise. Totally worth it, not a good idea for more than an hour or two if I want to stand upright the next day.

1974 Honda 400F long term restoration project from the good old US of A with stupidly low mileage on the clock. I bought this bike in the middle of my K build so haven't really started it yet other than getting it running (it hadn't ran for a very very long time). The brake fluid had turned to powder and the carbs were full of old fuel which had turned to tar. It has good compression but I think i'm going to need to do more work there. I have had the frame repaired (someone had hit the side stand HARD!) and I have repainted it. I don't expect to finish it for at least a year.
I won't be chopping this one.

I've added a new ride to my stable this last week. Unfortunately it came as the result of the loss of one of my K's.
It's a work in progress as it did need some tlc, but for the price with everything else that came with it I just couldn't say no.

just cracked 3,000 miles on this DL650 since April.  Not as gyroscopically perfect as the K, and the doesn't have quite the top end torque, but the L twin revs to 10K.

It went above and beyond going down White Lake ATV trails in Langlade county Wisconsin this weekend in order to get my girlfriend and I out to hike the Kettlebowl segment of the Ice Age Trail.  Tackled some babyhead rocks, some rutted hill climbs and sandy washes and the ride there and back too.

The 6th gear is nice too - not a jetfighter but admirably willing to tackle what you throw at it given the limitations.

Mine was a Honda 90, at 15 years old [and holding a learners license] the bike had to be 5HP or less, and the 90 was 5HP. Got a Honda 350 when I turned 16, then a Honda 750 when I was 17. It's the one with the fiberglass unibody and 4 in 1 pipes at left.

It ain't on 2 wheels, but it's still a blast to scoot around in, and climbs slopes you'd think were impossible ... it's amphibious too, in case you make a wrong turn in Albuquerque and have to cross water  ;)  It's a lot muddier now.

Ditched the sportster.  Got this DL650...   Pretty good if a bit more vibration than the K.  Great fuel economy.  Kind of a mule.
I  took this down in western NC, where I saw a lot of Triumph Tigers.  Comes in a triple, with nice long shocks...  Except for the fact that they aren't cheap even used, I think it would make a great "K75GS" type bike.

But I'm getting my vstrom dialed in comfort wise, so I think I'll try to wear it out before lusting after a tiger 800.

In terms of my other moto ownerships, I've owned the following in chronological order:

1. 2007 Honda Rebel (sold)
2. 2013 Honda Shadow Phantom
3. 1983 BMW R65 (sold)
4. 1985 BMW K100

I had a 'glass body on a 750 for a short bit around 2000 or so. It had a F vin number, but a K engine in it. Total blast as a toy, though.
I didn't start ridin' till about a year after I left home, at the tender age of 19. Bought a 71 Honda 450 to learn to ride on. Turned down a friends dads bike, for around the same money, 'cause I did not want hard bags and a big ol' fairing old mans bike... it was a 70s Honda 400F 4 cyl. (I did not know much back then...) No clue who thought putting that aftermarket Vetter stuff on a 400F was a good plan.
From there there have been a parade of HDs and beater bike that would take a while to list!

I went back and looked at my original post in this thread and realized I've had a nearly complete turn over in bikes in those few years.

1985 K100 RT sold
Acquired a 1988 K75S (love it!)
2008 KLR 650 was sold
2015 KTM 1190 ADV became a 2017 R1200 GSA
2009 R1200 GS became a 2015 Yamaha WR250R
Still have the 77 HD Low Rider, kid owns the rigid but it's still in my parent's garage.
1983 R80RT was acquired (still need to sell it...decent bike, zero excitement for me and it's at work because I have no room at home...good boss!)

Think I need a classic British twin or a multi-cylinder 2-smoke (or both). Although not technically classic British twin, I kinda dig the new 650 Royal Enfield models and keep an eye out for a used one.

Clearly I also need more storage space. Lumber prices have kept that from happening but I'm getting very tired of banging my head in the 10 x 12 shed that houses my K bike and the GSA.

I've recently expanded my stable.
In the hopes of getting my wife to ride again, I went a bit bigger than my K and R and picked up a 2017 HD Ultra Limited.
It will take me some getting used to but I think I'm doing ok so far......  After some saddle time on this beast, my K seems like a mini-bike... lol..

Quoting meself seems....narcissistic (had to look up the spelling) but here we are with some changes...again.

Back in April I traded off the 2017 R1200GSA for something slightly lighter and more high strung. Got a Ducati DesertX Eye-talian thing, its frisky. Was tired of the GSA going into Limp-in mode and dragging it 300 mile round trip to the dealer only for the mother ship to say "adjust this/check that/send it back home to the owner". I should have made them pick it up under the roadside assistance every time.

I recently sold the 1983 R80RT to a very happy 81 years young man.

Last but not least, the building crew arrives next Monday to build a garage on this new 30 x 50 slab of concrete. If this crew works like the concrete guys did, I suspect it will be complete and ready for me to start wiring by next Friday. The Amish don't fool around!

In addition to a 1991 K75, I ride a 2015 R1200RT, a 1979 R65 with Siebenrock 860, and a 1980 Goldwing. They’re all so different and I can never pick a favorite. My typical destination for these is Alice’s Restaurant in the Santa Cruz mountains (SF Bay Area). The twisty roads up to and around Alice’s show the strengths and weaknesses of each of these bikes as well as myself!

Also the versys I found very twitchy especially for two up. People say it 'hides its weight', what that really means is you have a heavy bike without the benefit of having a heavy bike. That thing blew around on the highway more than any 500 lb machine should.

The whole idea was to sell the versys and buy two bikes to replace it: a scooter for commuting and a 80s-90s sport touring bike. I also looked at a Kawi ZG1000 and a Honda ST1100, but ultimately decieded I didn't want four carburetors in my life.

Additionally, after I finish restoring my K75 RT, I'm starting on a free 80s Honda XL600R.

Before all this I had a 2005 KLR 650, my first street bike. Before that I had a klx300, crf150r big wheel, cr125, and a xr250r with a 285 big bore kit. I used to ride those when I was teenager back up in Wilmingotn VT on the VAST trails.

That was why I bought mine, believe it or not. I live on seven miles of gravel road—half of it uphill—and much of my traveling is on Class 3 gravel. It has worked out okay. Lubing the clutch hub/transmission input splines is a half-day job but I've only needed to do it twice in 60,000 miles to stay on schedule. I had to replace the driveshaft when its socket splines became worn like those on your Brick. I found a low mileage rear drive offered with its driveshaft for replacement.

Even with its relatively short stroke suspension, the Brick has done alright over pothole fields and ruts created by heavy rain here and hasn't been rattled to pieces. Longer suspension like with a KLR, Honda XL650, Suzuki DR650 would be more comfortable, but riding the Brick over those rough roads keeps the quadriceps and glutes in good condition so there's that.  :laughing4-giggles: It's been great on the highway—mpg is 48–53 depending upon speed and/or wind direction—so I'm satisfied in total.

I hear you, albeit a lower ride height. Extra loads on the back really effect trail braking, but the tailgater's are very much held at a safe distance.

Thanks Caveman, good to be back. I'll look into the CJR get together, as we go to the Beartooth Rendevous every year. The KLR is the 2 wheel equivalent of our ARGO 8x8 .. best thought of as agricultural use. Super comfy ride, and can do figure 8's easily for a tall bike, and handles the dirt roads well. I hope all's super for you! Cheers
