DUCT tape. It was originally made for sealing heating and cooling ducts.

I thought the same thing re duct tape. Google set me straight:
"Cotton Duck" is a 1940 term for canvas, the US military developed the tape for waterproofing applications I learned. I think it's safe to say that purists are safe speaking duck tape, despite the prevalence of the patent Duct tape brand, etc.
Plenty of contradictory info presumes the duct application was the original use. "I too was a longtime Duct tape nomenclature snob" (NomenCLAYture)...
