91 K100RS 16V Engine Tear Down
« on: August 19, 2022, 09:20:44 PM »
Bike came to me in parts.  It's all there just taken apart.  Engine was basically a long block.  Decided to tear it down and replace all the seals at 48,000 miles.  I know I know if it ain't broke but see below.  Not sure why it looks like there is sand in there but I'd guess it's coolant.  So gotta do the head may as well go all the way.

I've taken everything off but the short block.  I want to pull the pistons but am leery since Clymer says I need a special too that basically looks like a h with two sockets and one side has an angle gauge.  And that's for the Connecting rod bearing caps.

Question one:  Can I get away with just an angle gauge for reassembly?  I can't read apparently
Questing two:  New bolts and nuts for said caps yes?  Again Says it right there
Question three:  Clymer doesn't have the right torque for the driven shaft bolts.  Definitely not 8-10 ft lbs like it says in the book.  Links don't work for me in the manuals section so anyone know what those need to be at?  There's 4 of them two hex head and two allen head.  If I had to guess above 50ft lbs for sure.  Actual repair manual gives specs thanks for that.

Just me but I'd swap in another engine before I'd tear one down.

And you're not limited to a K1/K100RS4V engine because a K1100 engine will also fit in that frame.

How do I know that? Because the early K1100LTs used the same frame as the K100RS4V:

Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

Laitch thank you it does work and has my torque question answered.

Frankenduck Maybe a project down the road.  I got it torn all down tonight.  Bare block now.  I think it just sat so long.  Everything seems fine no measurements yet though.

Time to start a build thread.

Your signature has a lot of useful stuff in there Frankenduck.
