I have a question with regard to a starting issue.

I keep my bike on a trickle charger. When I start her she starts and runs fine. When I stop and go to start again the starter does not turn. I also lose my lights indicators horn etc.
I tried the reverse sprag thingy and it sometimes helps.

If I leave it on the trickle charger for a while it will start again. I'm not sure whether the issue is with the starter or alternator. The Battery light goes off when the engine starts.

I understand that the Load Shed Relay will take the power off the ancillary systems when the starter is pressed. Am I right in thinking that if the Starter brushes are worn you get a poor grounding and the Circuit to the LSR will be open therefore leaving everything off ?.

Pull the starter and clean and measure the brushes, should take you about an hour. Carbon build up does funny things on Bricks.

The load shed relay which has the headlight and some other stuff connected grounds to the hot brush of the starter. If the starter is not energized this provides a path to ground for the relay coil, thus providing current to the headlight, etc.

However, when the starter button is depressed +12v is applied to the hot brush. The load shed relay coil now has +12v applied to both ends of the coil - thus no ground. So the relay turns the headlight and stuff off until the starter button is released.
