Title: "new" strange noise...clutch?
Post by: 552255 on May 03, 2012, 03:01:11 PM

Recently started hearing a subdued bell ring-type of noise when under power, in low gears, low throttle...from the 'bellhousing' area i think.  Pull in clutch as i'm moving/coasting and rev engine, no problem/noise.  Its not very apparent, and sounds kinda like flywheel/rotation 'ring' for lack of better description.  No oil leak apparent at weep hole yet.  Sat in drive and slowly pulled in/released clutch in gear, listening, and sound is apparent as it begins to catch...so its something to do with the clutch/flywheel i think, but no slippage or any problems so far...

any ideas what i can look forward to? (am planning a 3000mi. ride in 3 weeks)

'97 LT with 25k, am hoping its just a standard K-bike ghost in the machine and will quiet down with use.
any info appreciated-
thanks
Eric

Ok, so i started trying to isolate and figure out what it was....and checked the clutch adjustments, and lo, it was simply the handle adjustment.  The lock nut was loose, and there was too much play in the handle (it didn't seem like much) after tightening up the slack, the noise has dissappeared.  Couple of things: no way lower lever clutch is gonna be adj. without rear wheel and/or muffler removal, and it suprising how much a bit of cable 'slack' will affect the works...
...whew!

From personal experience, it can be done with a bit of cursing and a suitable box spanner or socket
