92 K75S turns over without key in
« on: July 07, 2020, 02:45:21 PM »
Left the bike for 7 months. Disconnected the negative. Returned and charged the old battery and tried to start. It almost caught but then died and made a strange sound. Put in a new battery and with the computer out and key off it sparks at the neg and the engine turns over. Before I drain the gas tank - it’s Full of course, am I right in assuming that the starter relay fried? I have a spare ready. Would love to have some advice. Thanks.

Sounds like the contacts are welded on the starter relay.

Does the starter spin as soon as you connect the battery even if you aren't pressing the start button?

Yes it spins with everything off. Bought the bike 2 years ago. Was a garage queen with 9000 miles. An exact duplicate of my 92 S that I sold 25 years ago, so I had to have it. After charging the 2007 battery and it all died, I tested the voltage and it read 1.78 volts. I’m Sure I fried the starter relay. Thanks for the reply.

Take a breaker bar handle or something of the like and whack the right rear edge of the relay box. You might dis-lodge the contacts.

If tapping it doesn't free it up the cover can be removed with a bit of effort. Once removed the stuck contacts can gently pried apart,
you can then file them with a pints file.

Put a new relay in and all is fine. Took apart the old starter relay. Contacts were open but the inputs showed continuity. Must be a short somewhere.
