New from Illinois
« on: December 05, 2016, 03:29:29 AM »
Good Morning, Afternoon, or Evening!!!

Just picked up an 1985 K100 with 19,xxx miles for $300.00 in good running condition!  Previous owner half-a**ed a couple of repairs on the bike, but am looking to fix everything he couldnt.

The main thing that bothers me is that he stripped the bottom of the fuel level sender, and had to rig it to sit outside of the tank. (looks like absolute poo). So hopefully I can find a replacement.

Looking forward to doing a lot of maintenance (fluid change, check valve lash, plugs, filters, gaskets, etc) and getting to know the bike. I have all winter to tinker with it.

Hopefully as soon as I am done with the maintenance I will be fabricating a header/exhaust, making a right side kickstand, swapping out the handlebars, changing out the seat for something different, and getting the tank painted Alpina White with new roundels.

I currently work at an auto repair and performance shop as a welder/fabricator, and also have my Associates degree in Welding Technology.

I come from a family of gearheads and mainly Harley enthusiasts, so they naturally are giving me crap for not owning a "hog".

I have owned many project cars: 1985 BMW 318i (Turbo M10), 1987 Mazda RX7 Turbo 2, 1990 BMW 325i (S52 swap), 2001 Audi S4 (Big turbos- 600+whp). As well as a few other motorcycles/scooters: Honda Ruckus, Honda Grom, Kawasaki KZ750, Honda CB550.  I definitely enjoy maintaining and modifying.

Looking forward to learning everything I can about these unique motorcycles, and also help answer questions that I may have an answer to.

(Pics of bike in current state will come soon)

Thanks for reading!!!

Welcome to the asylum from the land of OZ. Don't worry about the Harley owners not everybody can have taste. You can always wave as you pass them, as they are sit on the side of the road.  :hehehe

Welcome to the asylum...Sounds like a great deal!  As you most likely have figured out, the bike is intuitive and easy to work on.  Since you have a runner, you can spend time on the fun stuff (upgrades and mods)!

Welcom!  85's have some unique features, including the seat, tailpiece, hotter cams, and the only year they used 2 low fuel lights (5 litre and 3 litre I think)  Often referred to as "FYK"  (Finest Year K)  Another good resource besides this place is ibmwr.org.  Lots of tech info and a good flea market.

. . . Often referred to as "FYK"  (Finest Year K) . . .
Welcome, bfitz!
When you learn the origin of that reference, FYK, it kind of loses its punch. :giggles

Welcome!

Hardly riders are so slow the only way you can tell they aren't broke down on the side of the road when you pass them is by how much noise they're making.

Is that from the bikes or the riders?  :dunno   :hehehe

Haha thanks for all the warm welcomes! I read some info on ibmwr and found some interesting articles. Searched and read a few threads on here and am definitely looking forward to reverse engineering some of the electrical nonsense.

Welcome from a neighbour up North. Sounds like you know a thing or two about a thing or two. Check all the rubber stuff. I will be testing the lower throttle bodies on mine (an '86 K100RT). I think I'm getting some leaking. Great odd machines, for sure.
