BAT has a devious bidding process designed to sucker people into a bidding war.

If a bid is entered with less than two minutes left then it resets the clock to a full two minutes. This got the bid up $950 at the end.

They're good capitalists maximizing their profit.

It isn't devious if it is clearly explained in the description of how BAT's auctions work, which it is. Actually, it's more like a live auction where bidding wars can often occur except it uses two minute intervals, instead of an auctioneer's timing and gavel, to determine who has the staying power.  :laughing4-giggles:

Sniping protection

The purpose of sniping is to avoid getting into bidding wars, not promote them like BAT does.

It's an auction, fergawdsake. It takes guts, money and impulse control to prevail. To update an old saw, bidders should put on their fully-matured person trousers; otherwise, head back to their eBay playground.  :laughing4-giggles:

The auction's responsibility is to get the seller the highest possible price for their item.  Sniping goes against that principle so I think that BAT's policy of two minute extensions for late bids until all bidders have maxed out is correct.

That eBay doesn't prevent sniping is probably due to a flaw in the site's code.  If they were smart, they would fix it.  But then, they might lose the bargain hunters who try to get that last second winning bid.

Why in heck would Ebay want to prevent people from entering a higher bid right before an auction ends? That makes no sense. It helps sellers get a higher price and Ebay gets more commission.

Do it within the code? How so?

The software that runs the eBay site is what controls what happens when a bid is posted.  I guess it was a mistake on the part of eBay that their software doesn't do what BAT does when a last second bid is placed.

That it doesn't is an oversight on the part of the site designers who didn't specify that particular functionality for the guys writing the code.  I'm pretty sure if it was spec'd it would have been included since it wouldn't be that hard to implement.

If you don't want your bid to be sniped, up your bid.

;

I regularly drool over the BaT stuff. Have never registered to bid because at some point I'd probably do something stupid.

Yeah, they have UniMogs on there now and then. I don't need one and can't afford one, but I could probably convince myself that on both.

MMmmmm. . . Portal axles!

I'm with you on that.

Also the early '60s Mercedes convertibles. "just" within my affordability window but totally unnecessary indulgence and will end up costing way more!
