tragkorbs and 22litre top box K75. Are there any difference between ‘1st generation’ ones, and ‘ 2nd generation’ ones? as a set has come up. My bikes an 86.
-
As far as I can tell, both generations hang on the same mounts. The difference seems to be the handles and which way the locks face. Gen 1 faces in and gen 2 faces out.
-
Rectangular upward facing locks on Gen1; cylindrical inward facing locks on Gen 2; cylindrical outward facing locks and larger interior volume on Gen 3. Ted Verrill explains more here (http://www.verrill.com/moto/hardcases/bmwhardcases.shtml).

I've got two 22Lt top boxes, one has a plastic hinge similar to the tragkorb hinge. The other one has a metal hinge which appears to be a better proposition.

Thanks. Great link.

My bike came with the gen 1 strays. I was after the 22 litre top box. I’m not too bothered about the side cases, as the ones that came with the bike are ok

There seems to be only one version (generation) of the iconic 22lt top case. Mine and all the examples I've seen in original condition have metal exterior cover hinges and locking, cylindrical push-button–operated latches that hook to wire bails attached to the ceiling of their covers. I'd like to see an example of an original 22lt case with a plastic side case–style hinge. That seems like a bodge to me. Maybe Martin will post a photo of his.

Is this it?

That's it. It looks like it has its locking pin. Do you have the mounting plate that fits on the rack? That is a necessary part.

dunno if it comes with it. I can soon knock something up, I expect.

Does anyone have a pic of the mounting plate please?

This.

This.
Thanks. How does it mount onto the rack then?

This is the This of the previous post after magnification. Knock that out in a couple of minutes using an old biscuit tin.

It snaps into place on a rack designed to accommodate it.
-
The mounting plate fits under the OEM luggage rack. The box is then held on by the twist lock pin inside the box,

Indeed. If that can't be reproduced at a fraction of its cost by one of Her Magesty's loyal subjects using tin snips, a biscuit tin and a teacup full of spliffs, the world is indeed off its axis.

As per requested, the first one I bought has a manufacture date August 1985. I replaced four of the original rivets with bolts due to the plastic tab inside the box that holds the lid restraint system being broken off. I also added a bit off para cord as a precaution. The hinge looks to be original it has a metal reinforcing strip on the inside of the box to stop the rivets pulling through, this strip is not on the later box. The second top box with the metal hinge was manufactured in May 1986. A mate has a couple of 22Lt boxes but I believe they are a lot later in manufacture, I'll check when I can.

I don’t smoke tobacco and paper. It can give people cancer, even over here!

After a bit of research there were actually two types of hinges on the Iconic 22Lt Top Boxes the original plastic one part No 46542300450 priced at $10.31. This was superseded by 46542303509 a metal hinge $54.06 on the 15/07/1986. I took off the OEM plastic one which is starting to fatigue in preparation to replacing it with a modified tragkorb hinge and it was stamped with the partial part number 2 300 450.

Thanks for the information and photos concerning the plastic hinge, Martin.

You're welcome. I'm going to take it into the Trades Guild with the hope it can be reconditioned. But if not the old hinge will mounted in a place of honour, as it's probably one of the last in existence.
