Since joining this forum I've encountered a lot of members my age. Coincidence or am I the average brick rider ?

When I go to like open houses at the dealer I think I'm at least half the age of everyone else

When I first started riding in the mid sixties, More motorcyclists were young men, today it seems like most are older men. BMW's were also always in the minority and usually ridden by older riders. Mostly touring riders. Back then a lot of young guys could not afford automobiles and used motorcycles for their main mode of transportation, not so today. Motorcycles have become a luxury item and young families can't afford to be spending on single purpose luxury items. Older guys can and do. Nationwide the median age for licensed motorcyclists is 41 years old. Much older than in the 80's.

Got my first brick at 65, and two years later I now have three. I always like BMW's, but thought they were way to expensive to justify. When friend at work bought a K100RS and told me what he paid for it I decided it was time.
I agree with TomB about young guys and bikes. I think another factor is the popularity of trucks. Young guys I know want a fancy pickup, bikes aren't even on the radar. I am pretty sure that manufacturers are aware of the age of riders and market their product to an older demographic of successful higher income professionals.

When i sit down at the local BMW club breakfast I feel I should be at the kids table and i'm 53! If I want to feel really young I go to the Guzzi breakfast.

Coincidentally I watched a you tube video the other day that had a young sport bike rider texting while riding. These young folks do some of the strangest things on sports bikes today. One of them was standing on the moving bike backwards!

Last fall I was passed by a guy standing up on the seat of a sport bike. :mbird I was doing ten over in a 55 mph zone at the time. How the heck do they steer like that? It isn't even noteworthy to see somebody weaving through traffic on one wheel. I have a feeling there won't be many old riders out of the present generation of young riders.

Nature will take care of it. After all, there is only so much food to go round and when I see these guys I know I will be well fed in the future.

The CVMG (Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group), Old Fort York section, meets for Sunday breakfast a 5 minute walk from my home ... just sayin'.

I must admit, in my younger days I used to ride by the bar that I hung out at standing on my seat. It was good for free drinks on a regular basis as the parking lot was always full. A Reckless Driving Endangering Life and Property ticket put an end to that.

Ah Haaah I just worked out why my new GPS has movies and games and a Ebook. It's obviously made for younger people who can multi task, text and drive etc. No wonder I kept on hitting things, I will now just use it as a GPS.

I just turned 63, have had Bricks since my 40's.
Currently have:
2004 K1200RS in Piedmont red metallic
1997 K1200RS in black with silver fern emblems on it
1990 K75S Special Edition in Onyx Schwartz
1987 K75 in violet - this years winter project to turn into a cafe racer.
If anybody has the paint code for this violet / purple colour it would be appreciated.

For the OP I'm over 60 and under 70... I take it you (Quiltzig) don't have a paint code number under the seat? Mine is 675 (Red Metallic), perhaps yours is displayed here, although it is a site in the UK... http://www.bmbikes.co.uk/colourcharts.htm . Hope this helps a bit...

The paint colour sticker is long gone, so no indication of what it should be. It is a rather nice purple / violet colour.
I have checked the paint codes but nothing seems to match with this year - 1987 K75S. Will talk to my bike painter mate & see if he can colour match it.

I’m glad to see that I’m not the oldest… I often think the motorcycling population should have been studied by Darwin – if you get past 5 years your in with a chance. Or so I thought – some years ago I came to France to work and now retire – the greatest risk to my life is a car heading towards me, going too fast and on all sides of the road, driven by a young mother – children bouncing about in the back, while she is on the phone having an argument or doing her makeup …. I keep thinking of Yossarian in Catch 22 when he said “those bastards are trying to kill me”. An excellent motto for defensive riding!

First Beemer at 20 (R69S), first brick (K75S)...Umm... OK 51. Had friends that swore by them not at them, so I took the plunge, bought from original owner. Not as cherry as I thought but well maintained with 42K on the clock. Baby it way too much with new parts and work it doesn't need but lots of fun to work on and ride.

So..........while at Barber Vintage Festival a clean '76 R75 caught my eye, or as Martin would say, grabbed me by the bollocks, pic below ( bike, not bullocks,Laitch). Brought it home last Friday from the PO after closing my wife's retirement IRA. Parked safely in my garage, I bent down to pick up my glove I had dropped, and to my chagrin, fell across the floor into a tool box. DID NOT spring to my feet cursing like Gryphon did when he knocked three bikes over. Thankfully the R75 was securely erect. Not so much my youthful, sprightly self. The bad news is the hospital said no riding/driving for 3-4 months, the good news, I had finished my winter work except for a handlebar swap.And no, whichever smartass is tempted to ask, I did not have my helmet on. :falldown:

Yes, Chaos, I have some of the stuff, and a couple seats, and I don't plan to keep that 2-1 pipe which is like new. BUT.........I'm gonna be a few days straightening out this hospital before I can sort through stuff. There is a neat fairing,too. PM me what you're looking for and Ill get to it soon as I can.

Ace, Hope you heal up quickly with no complications. Seems like a tough time of year. Last week my wife fell in the garage and broke her foot.
Hope you will be able to at least do some wrenching on that new ride while you wait for the clearance to saddle up again.

Sorry to here of your mishap, nice new addition to the fleet. I originally started looking for a R80 but kept on running across really good reviews on K75's, end of story. Hope you have a fast recovery.

Sorry to hear of your fall with consequences.Self delusion is a given.Punishment from the motor gods is the more likely explanation with your burgeoning acquisitions.The gods are looking after you,as they do me regularly,by protecting you from that fatal accident on that very next outing.My favourite self delusion is to "always look on the bright side....."

Appreciate the encouragement, guys. I've had a bunch of bikes flow through over the years, some you enjoy, some you try to give new life., some just slip through. Never really been a collector, if it ain't being ridden, then someone else deserves it. There's a couple that will probably slip away come Spring. The R75/6 is nostalgia cause the R75/5 was my second ever BMW, white, no less. This one is a solid machine, but has a few things about it that are too non-traditional, so it's gonna be a Winter project along with the K100GS brat, which needs some finishing touches. I enjoyed the season with about 12,000 miles of various machines but no shop time. I did get the K100RS Sidecar finished this summer, but that's about all. Planning a long road trip with the sidecar come late Spring, and ready to get back in the shop hopefully soon. :euro

32, but have been riding since I was 13 off-road(thanks dad).
Look I'll be honest, I had no intention of riding a K. I wanted an R! But after seeing that a 1150GS with 100,000+ miles would go for over $4,000 I opened up to other BMWs. My Uncle suggested a K75 over the K100 - he said it was like riding an electric motorcycle. No vibration and plenty of power. It's faster than the KLR I used to have, but thats about it. :dunno2: :riding:
I also have a Harley Davidson Road Glide which I love. But it's big, heavy, and overkill for rides around town. I go on a couple long rides (2,000+ mile) rides with my father a year, we don't share much in common except for bikes. He also has a Harley.

I'm a millennial. I find that most of my friends my age have no interest in riding touring bikes, much less own property large enough to store them. Motorcycles have gotten exponentially more expensive then in the past, and people have less expendable income. I always feel like the young guy at any gathering. The HOG chapter I refused to join, as they dress like pirates and have more drama than a movie theater. MOA looks promising, but they seem to look down on semi-vintage. :musicboohoo:

Yes, Green Bank I forgot that little place had its own nameI've been there several times, toured the facility, saw the film, got the lecture and then they bus you out to the all the different radio-telescope dishes, pretty interesting stuff.
AND
The roads are terrific, miles of twisty asphalt and most of them in pretty good shape.
Great ride destination and plenty of other diversions.

They block cell phones due to the disturbance they make, so my streaming music stopped and I had to use my iPod. But the roads in the state of West (by God) Virginia are usually freshly paved, and never straight. One of my favorite destinations. :curvy-road :curvy-road [size=78%] [/size]

24 new to motobricks but been riding dirt bikes/enduros/dual sports for 12 years

44, for a couple more months anyway. This is my first BMW but I have a problem...some drink, others gamble, etc. I have been riding off-road since 12 or 13 and started on-road by 18, drank the HD koolaid around 24-35. Then I stumbled onto the Triumph Speed Triple and I started really enjoying motorcycles again. Got tired of the riding position and played around looking for something that fit me and my local crap roads better.
My current "main ride" is a 2015 KTM 1190 adventure and it's a LOT of fun. Also have a KLR that serves as my "errand runner" and backwoods machine as well as a couple of HD bikes roaming around, but haven't ridden the HDs more than 10 miles/year each for 3 years or so.
Bought the K100 to build a street-fighter/cafe sort of bike, but I did put a tag on it and have ridden it about 100 miles before my fat-arse popped the shock seal! So far I'm impressed and I'm in no hurry for that project anyway...even if my digital speedo did show up today.

I'm a HD rider and bought the Yellow BMW that didn't run as apersonal challenge to myself to see if I could make a non running MC into running mc. I've come to discover a whole group of Brick enthusiast and a wealth of MC knowledge. Thanks Guys

Howdy, I turned 64 yesterday, Easter Sunday! (wife sez she still loves me, when I'm.....) Thought about dying Friday and coming back on my birthday but don't think the family would have appreciated the humor. Got my K when I was the tender age of 33, in a couple year's I will have had the same bike half of my lifetime. :yow Not many places, people or other things I can say the same for. Must be something too these contraptions.

I've never had anything but a K75, have only ridden 3 other bikes than a K75 and have had K75s 5X longer than I've had any specific girlfriend. Obviously, I'm not a well person.

Both my Beemers are just half my age, but somehow they are eligible for the cheaper "Historic" registration.

It means you're eligible for specialty plates but aren't allowed on the freeway.

Classic Plates in CT do not have any restrictions as to what highways you can use.
Also the value for property taxes in the town where you live is limited to $500.00
So most of my vehicles only have an $11.50 property tax on each one.

I just had a thought about what you wrote and realized that I bought my MHR900 new in '84 and I'm now 56 so I've had it for 33 of those years :mbird . Where does the time go :dunno2: .

Bought my first K75 about 2 yeras ago, so I'm somewhat of a newby at these bikes. I have three of them now, they are kind of a disease I guess.
Own 7 bikes presently, two Airheads, an NX650, a DR650 and three K75's. Gonna sell off a couple soon (i keep telling myself).
