Beartooth Rendevous, Aug 19-21
« on: June 21, 2021, 08:43:38 PM »
Just registered for the Beartooth Rendevous in Red Lodge, MT.
It's near Billings, and on the way to Yelowstone NP via the 212hwy which is very scenic and a hoot to ride.
Cabin bunks are still available ($30.00 for 3 nights), as are tent camping sites.
Last year the food was superb, and although no "courses" or "seminars" are scheduled, it's a great quiet time in the woods to get away from everything for a few days.
Hope to see some Brickster's there!

Where did your experience of the temperature up there fall along this scale, natalena?

The scale gives a good indication of what to expect. IIRC it was low 70's in the day, and 60's at night .. cool enough to warrant a sweater or jacket. As you go up a little in altitude, say to Cooke City, it definitely drops a few more degrees. No issues wearing full riding armor and getting hot.

If you ride North to Billings/Roundup area, it'll be at least 10 degrees warmer. likewise if you ride to Pompey's Pillar or Little Bighorn.
Cheers

Red Lodge is about 5,600' in elevation so it can get somewhat cold there depending upon the weather.

BT Pass is above 10,000 and it can snow up there at any time. If you ride BT Pass late in the afternoon or early evening it can get very cold up there, especially if the wind is blowing. I was there the first week of September in 2018 and just beat a huge snow dump they had up there that evening.  I was at BT Pass late that day and it was definitely in the 30s with very high winds. (So I just rode faster to get down to Red Lodge where it was warmer.)
Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

Sidebar: I usually don't ride up to BT Pass unless someone wants to. The better riding is east along Nye, Dean and Fishtail.  It's still in the Beartooth range, less tourists, great blue ribbon fishing. Was there yesterday, awesome jaunt.

At Glastenbury Mt. shelter on the Long Trail in Vermont temperatures can be in the low 30º range in late August. It's around 3300' elevation so those 50º temps up at the Lodge in Montana seem appealing to me. Fickleness of seasonal weather is a given in the mountains.  177381

What roads? I'm going to be riding in MT next week.

If you hit BT late in the day there usually aren't many tourists. I shot this whole video without having to pass a single car.

A good start is out of Columbus. I'm at work W-F, holler if you're here before or after then. There's a great burger spot along the Sweetwater. The temps are expected to be triple digits.

Another great Rendezvous with about 230 participants, and variety of bikes to see .. dominated by GS and GSA!
Stayed all 3 nights in peaceful surroundings  :)
Only 3 bricks seen, including a sweet 100RS.

natalena,
looks fun wish I could have slipped out but have one of my daughters getting married next week in mid Montana and just could not stay gone that long this year. But I bet we will run into each other again in the next year or two.

Duck,
Nice vid, looks like going through from the south side. "dam cruisers", as long as there isn't a big herd of them they normally don't bother me. Typically they hug the fog line or the center line when they should be in the opposite lane position! So I just slip by them after a turn or two when it is obvious they have no clue I'm behind them (never look in mirror).

Tried to put a pic of Marie and I going through Bear Tooth a year or so ago but just don't know how to link a picture. You'll have to take my word on it we got stuck in the snow!

Right On! We're in Billings, with a ranch near Hysham. It'd be great to see you and family.

Great video Frankinduck, the Pass had snow stick one of the days, but the roads dried out by Saturday.  Rode 2-up, and had no issues with the scattered shower's. Cheers
