Odyssey PC-680 battery re-named?
« on: January 25, 2021, 03:19:16 PM »
Just checking local / Canadian sources for a replacement battery and see that the PC-680 is now called an ODS-AGM16L according to Odyssey Canada :

https://odysseybattery.ca/product/ods-agm16l-pc680/

As far as I determine, specs remain the same. I'm aware of less expensive alternatives, but based on experience with the brand (in my recently sold Moto Guzzi at least - most recent one lasted almost 12 years!) am inclined to go this way. Canadian pricing seems to be just over $200 (incl all taxes /fees/ shipping) ...

wonder why it was renamed?

batteries are a bit of a commodity though.  there are only a couple of companies that actually make them.  the same battery is then sold under a number of different labels.

Check out Saskbattery.com for great Canadian pricing on Odyssey batteries.  The PC680 can be had for $169.00 + HST and free Canada-wide shipping.  Mine took 3 days door to door to Toronto.

The last couple of times I've purchased batteries for my K's, I'd gone with Westco 12V20P(I'd generally get 5 years out of them)... However....
My new to me R1100, that uses the same battery as the K1100, and came with the same said Westco brand battery, yet still seemed to need more starting umph that what the Westco was wanting to put out and it was less than 1 year old.
I'd get ABS low power faults almost every morning at startup.
At the recommendation of numerous R bike owners, I went the route of a Motobatt AGM battery. Purchased thru Tom Cutter (Rubberchickenracinggarage.com) with 24mo warranty. From Tom it was $140 +S&H.

I've yet to leave the garage with it as the snow doesn't seem to want to stop long enough........ but so far I'm impressed with it's performance. No trouble starting and no ABS faults at startup, even when cold.
The last Westco I bought for the K's were back in 4/19 so we'll see how long they last this time around. I will more than likely go the Motobatt route when I'm due for a battery for the K.

Thanks Scott - prices are generally much higher when purchasing from the US due to exchange rate / import duty etc, so am going to stick with an Odyssey based on past experience (and other feedback from this forum) ... even if a little pricier eg if the Odyssey lasts 10 years (as mine did on the MG) but say 25% more than alternatives - then still a better buy if planning to keep the bike longer term?)

@rbm - that looks like a good price to me as would be just under $200 CDN incl shipping ... am going to check that out, thanks!

Edit - confirming rbm's suggestion (for Canadian 'brickers) ... $169.50 +tax (incl Canada-wide shipping) so just ordered one.

Edit - this reply from distributor re name change :

"When Odyssey bought Northstar they did a part# change over haul. Same battery no change"

Like many others I have had good success with the Odyssey batteries, usually getting nearly 10 years.
Currently in my K75s I have a new Odyssey and a BMW Gel (Exide) from the PO.  The Airheads have a recently installed Panasonic and a Motobatt that I bought from Tom.
So far all are good, last Panasonic was eight years.  I have multiple battery tenders that rotate among the bikes.
