That truly is barren.   :eek2:  Why?  Too high for trees to grow?  Poison soil?

What you see on this particular picture is a "crawling" glacier. It´s common on the edges of glaciers where they "crawl" into valleys and canyons, brake up and melt. It has a blanket of sand and ash from the Eyjafjallajökull eruption few years ago.

However if you take a look at these other picture here: http://s1073.beta.photobucket.com/user/throsing/library/Icelandic%20scenery you will see that we have a very diverse scenery and landscape.
