HOLT BMW And More Online Motobrick Paint Suppliers
« on: April 30, 2015, 06:37:45 PM »
Time for a repaint, not just a touch-up.  Can anyone recommend an online paint supplier who can supply BMW motorcycle colors in quarts?  Acrylic Urethane preferred.

I've had excellent results using low VOC acrylic spray paint from Motorcar Colors in South Jersey/Delaware. Excellent by my definition means a solid marriage between quality and cost, and at under $30/can for true BASF Glasurit match from the code under the seat, you can't go too wrong. The product is called SEM Custom Fill. I used duplicolor primer, the SEM and the SEM 1 part clear, but if you're putting it on a tank or anything that could conceivably see fuel, you MUST use SprayMax clear. The SEM can even had the metallic chips that give the BMW metallic colors that unique depth.

Problem is, Motorcar Colors doesn't ship product and I have to ride an hour to get it. But there must be an auto paint specialist near you that deals with Glasurit. I found these guys by calling Glasurit and asking who the local dealer is. They gave me a few names and MC was the closest.

There's also Colorite but they couldn't put what I wanted in a can, and were more expensive than the local guys, plus the shipping.

Maybe my standards are lower than the average Joe, but with good prep, good application, and buff and polish with 3M compounds it's a damned good match and has the same gloss as the original for about an $80 investment for tank and Parabellum fairing. So, the SEM acrylic urethane gets my vote...make the call to Glasurit of more info.

If you want to spray from a gun, call Holts BMW in Ohio -- but then you're talking in the $400 range just for the color.

I'll be spraying from an HVLP gun.  I have the other related equipment and have sprayed cars and boats before.  I am looking for the best combination of quality and economy.

Thanks for the tip on the Glasurit product!

Then call http://www.holtbmw.com/. They ship and have complete kits @ about $250/pt or $400/qt.

I have a gun too but chose not to deal with it for the color after using the SEM aerosol. Such a small surface -- cleanup PITA, multiple parts, 20 year old bike. I would have used a gun for two part clear but again, the SprayMax is such an excellent product -- it's almost not worth the hassle of a gun anymore for brick painting. Give it a try if you can find it before forking out the $400 -- you will want a can for touch-up anyway.

Check these guys out.  I have used their 2oz touch up paint in an airbrush and the results were very good.  In fact, I think they were better than that; you cannot see the repair.  Their match for Mystic Red was better than what an "official" BASF certified collision shop did for me with a sample part to match.

The site is kind tough to figure out, but you can always call them.  I think they are located in Northern Illinois.   When I did my bikes I shot the base myself and took the parts to a local shop to have them clearcoated when they were doing another job.  The price was really reasonable because they didn't have to mix any color, and I have professional results.

If you're going to spray your own primer and base coat, make sure to talk to the firm who's going to clear coat, because you'll want to make sure you both are in agreement as to what types of paint you're using.  Some paints are not compatible with each other.  Generally, keep your product selection to one manufacturer to ensure the paint system will work.

The guys I bought the paint from sell acrylic polyurethane.  Almost all of the local shops here are using water based systems and have no problem overcoating it.  Still, it's an excellent idea to check with them ahead of time for compatibility.  Maybe have a small sample done to be sure.

After the tip-over, it has gotten really expensive. Got parts coming, and I am looking for a way to repaint parts with the factory color code# 670.  Has anyone found a source from a shop that will ship to CA.? I did see the thread below, but hope for more options.

http://www.colorrite.com/
http://www.holtbmw.com/

They both shipped nationwide last time I checked. I don't think older K-Bike paint codes are listed on their page but if you call I think they can help you.

Holt is supposed to be the the Picasso of motorcycle paint. They say he sweats primer.

Then there's the rattle can option which I used with OK results. You can get BMW Glasurit colors aerosolized at some custom auto paint places. I get mine from a place in NJ but they don't ship -- check the BASF Glasurit website and call to see where the dealer is.

If you can live with DIY quality rattlecan is the way to go, but for clear always go with the 2-part SprayMax product.

I think laquer-based paints are basically a thing of the past. Water-based low VOC paint is what's available mostly. It's made technological advances to be a professional quality product. At least that's what what they told me when I inquired at various auto paint shops. YMMV.

Then try Holt. If he can't mix it from the code he can match it. He is the master, word has it.

Reviving this from the dead...
Am I following correctly that Motorcar Colors will put BASF/Glasurit (matched to code?) paint in a rattlecan?
Their DE shop is local to me.
Thanks!

I don't know if they still do, but they did for me a few years ago and I got pretty good results using it and 2-part SprayMax. I remember having to go to their NJ location to pick it up, though, for some reason. I used the Graphite and Mystic Red on two different bikes. The Graphite was a good match. The Mystic Red came out noticeably darker than the original color but that might be because I used a gray primer, whereas the factory might have used a white primer. I don't know if it's documented anywhere what color primer to use for any specific topcoat color.  If you're doing the whole bike it won't matter too much. But the short story is - I got acceptable (to me) results with good prep and the Motorcar Colors rattle can.

Thanks! I can handle a trip to NJ if I have to.
From the last time I sanded everything down, I think the factory primer was light gray or white.
I keep telling myself I'm just going to redo the tail cowling...but I know once I get into it I'll end up doing the whole thing.
Last round was over 10 years ago, and it hasn't aged well.

I have noticed that several paint suppliers in my area are now offering custom paint in rattle cans.  Ask around, and if possible, try to locate a BASF dealer who does Glasurit to get the best match.

Motorhobo, about Mystic red, it is a tri-coat finish that has a translucent mid coat with the tint and metallic flake that is applied over a specific(I think it is a silver) base coat.  Then the clear is applied.  That system is a pain in the ass to match because the amount of mid-coat applied has a huge impact on the finished color. At one time, you could get let down cards from BMW to help match the mid-coat, but not anymore.

I have been using a two coat system of base and clear over a light gray primer with decent results.  The dealer I get the paint from didn't have the formula for Mystic red, but mixed Ford Red Fire(code RF) which is a very close match.  In all lighting conditions the Ford color can't be told from the BMW factory color from more than a couple feet, and even up close it's hard to see any difference.

Thanks for that info, Gryph. I painted the Parabellum fairing with the rattle can stuff from Motorcar Colors, not the bike parts themselves, which are still original. That's how I know that the primer I use must've been way too dark, because the fairing is now noticeably darker than the bike. I keep telling myself I'll redo that fairing but who knows if I'll ever get to it. It has a pretty low give-a-shit index at the moment.

motohippy, I think they mix it in NJ and can ship it to DE. The first time I did it I don't think they had a DE location, at least that's the way I remember it from whatever brain cells I have left. BTW I'm in Chestertown MD, in case you want to meet up for coffee sometime. I don't know where in DE you are but, well, it's not like it's the biggest state in the Union. Send me a PM...
