What do people use to hack (fabricate) a dipstick for K bike transmissions?
I do not have the BMW factory shock adjuster - PO put on a Progressive shock and there is a wrench for that.
I have a Clymers and grasp that the measurement needs to be 116mm from lip of the fill.
I made one out of coat hanger and couldn't see the oil line (good clean oil).
I used a white plastic knife, and though I can see the oil at about the right line, I've already put ~30oz +/-
Either:
- I didn't accurately measure from container how much oil went in
- I didn't get an accurate reading from my picnic dip stick
- There's leak which isn't ending up on the driveway or the lower area of the bike
- Aliens are involved

The K100 fluid amount was around 850ml. A bottle of gear oil is about 960ml. I took out 110ml from a fresh bottle and dumped the rest into the gear box. I measured using a long screw driver and was in the ball park.

I use a plastic chopstick...
From the bottom of the stick, measure upwards 10mm and scribe a line around it.
From that line, measure upwards 116mm and scribe another line around the stick. This lines-up with the filler hole.
The oil level should be between the bottom scribed line and the bottom of the chopstick.
You can easily see the oil level.

I realize this is an old thread, but for those looking for a DIY freebie solution in the future:
I made mine out of the metal guide strip from an old windshield wiper. Depending on the type of wipers you use, the notched part will even be exactly 10mm from the bottom. :2thumbup:

Clymers actually has the dimensions in the book - page 43 of chapter 3 in my edition. Personally I chopped up and old wire coat hanger to the right lengths, seemed to work fine.

I've been using coat hanger wire for dipsticks for quite a while. I have found that if you pound the wire flat where the oil level marks are, it is a lot easier to see the oil, especially when it is new and of the thinner viscosity grades.
