A Smart CDI has a 0-60 time of 19.8 seconds and 45 horsepower, doesn't seem worth the effort of the swap

The real question is what's higher on the "real man" scale, a diesel or a v-twin?

Why not a v-twin diesel?

I wouldn't mind riding that. Wonder if and how he has gotten the gearing so that it can run decent highway speeds without over revving the engine, and i would probably ad a silencer to please my neighbours as i leave for work in the dead of night, but other than that, cool bike in my book!

Why not a v-twin diesel?

I was kind of thinking that too, but I'm not sure I would have enough testosterone... or a big enough beer gut for one of those.

On a serious note - that's very cool. Imagine the ridiculous amount of torque you would have on the low end. And probably gets 70MPG because it's powering such a light vehicle.

Guilio Carcano, one of Moto Guzzi's earlier designers (responsible for legendary 500cc V8 engine) thought a diesel engine was important to the future of Moto Guzzi. New owners, Aprilia, don't seem to agree as Moto Guzzi is rolling out mostly retro-styled cruisery/standard bikes now. It seems to me that if anyone could pull off a diesel production motorcycle, it's be BMW. But with all the recent VW emission cheating, I don't know if anyone would want to try to enter the diesel market now.

Thanks for sharing that interesting project. Total labor of love by that guy.

Apparently there is a call for diesel production in cars is to be wound down and phased out. Apparently diesels while cleaner in some ways are dirtier in others especially particulates. And the Franken Brick would be cooler and more macho with a crank handle.  :hehehe

Yeah - 650cc and 20:1 compression. That's manly for sure. I think I would only stop something like that on top of a hill...

Some Dutch guy did make a seeious effort to build a diesel motorcycle, as in start a serious factory, not just a one of home buid project. Sadly it never took off, i actually like how it looks and for a while saw one riding allmost daily arround my parts.
It had adventurebike styling and the same Smart triple diesel engine as the Frankenbrick in this topic.
Don't know why it didn't work. Maybe the world wasn't ready for a dieselbike, or maybe it was the CVT transmision people were affraid of.

My dad had a high performance 1915cc Volkswagen flat 4 installed in a motoboxer frame in the '90s. No, it wasn't a trike. Pretty much had to stand on the kickstarter

I often thought about putting a Subaru boxer into a boxer frame, thank god I never got around to it. At the time I had access to the engine, but no frame.

What the hell is with the music people put in these videos?

That first video up there made me miss Wmax. He would have written pages -- with diagrams -- about how you could do the same thing but much better. Where are you, Wmax?

this would be cool, don't think anyone has ever done a 180 degree 4 cylinder radial.  Best of boxers and V twins   :hehehe

Martin: Ref Subaru Boxer motor in K Bike

Check Youtube: Mighty Car Mods: Sleeper Beetle (best to watch the full length)

Check the results at the end - forget the power to weight ratios of a motorbike.

Thanks Vespa for the info on the Sub I will take a look but I'm afraid I'll get strange ideas a mate has an unused K75 frame. Do you know where I can get a cheap WRX engine? :nono

Buy the whole carBut of course you don't want any old WRX motor.
I wouldn't know the first thing about them.
But I'm sure the video should provide a few ideas.
Let me know what you think of it.
