Title: Things that will absolutely get you killed on the road.
Post by: Blue on August 26, 2016, 10:07:51 AM
I will start with the first two.

Synthetic oil.  So slippery it will leak past your seals and oil down your back rubber causing slide-out.

EMGO trunks.  Sits back so far will take weight off front tire causing slide-out.

 1. Synthetic oil.
 2. EMGO trunks.
 3. Preoccupation with resentments while entering a corner.
 4. Failure to do regular brake system maintenance.  Including yearly fluid flush and replacing the rubber hoses.
 5. Transitioning from moving to not moving too quickly is the thing that kills most riders.
 6. Assuming that 'sharp curve' warning signs don't apply to me because I'm on a brick.
 7. Riding like a complete asshole seems to do in a few as well.
 8. Idiots texting or phoning while they should be looking.
 9. Using blue locktite when you should be using red locktite.
10. Riding with a helmet.
11. Riding with your brain removed.
12. Blind passing is a fool's game.
13. Riding on a multi-lane highway right at sunset, headed due west.
14. Zipping down a sandy farm lane on a dirt bike, turn the corner, road is flooded.
15. Filtering. Stupidest thing you can do on two wheels.
16. Driving slowly in the left lane.
17. All styles of ape hangers.
18. All styles of reverse ape hangers.
19. Fixing a flat tire with mushroom plugs instead of rubber cement and sticky strings.
20. Textile pants and textile jackets.

2. EMGO trunks.
This could be a useful thread, Blue!
Observation:
The synthetic oil leak might be coincidental to elderly seal failure. Trunks should not be used to transport sacks of Portland cement, collections of fishing weights or cases of high-caliber ammunition.

Contribution:
3. Preoccupation with resentments while entering a corner.

agree...synthetic oil is not a killer....old seals are the killer.  if your seals are good, no oil comes out.

4. failure to do regular brake system maint.  including yearly fluid flush and replacing the rubber hoses before they are 20 years old.

3. Preoccupation with resentments while entering a corner.

Tore my MCL last winter this way, zipping down a sandy farm lane on a dirt bike, turn the corner, road is flooded.  Not used to riding on sand, rear wheel locked up and low sided...  Should have been pissed of and ruminating OR enjoying the ride... not both.

Rotella synthetic has seemed to been good to my Brick so far though.

Assuming that 'sharp curve' warning signs don't apply to me because I'm on a brick. Sometimes that sign actually means, "This is a 90-degree dogleg, so slow f**cking down, you idiot!", which I learned last week when the road right-angled like a t-square and I found myself blowing right through it at 35mph and trying to decelerate on the pea gravel path that went straight. Fortunately, I didn't lose control and there was a path there, not 60 foot cliff.

In the future, though, I will take hairpin warnings more seriously.

Idiots texting or phoning while they should be looking. And thank god they have now banned using it. But when I first started riding, the council used to do road repairs and spread kitty litter sized grey gravel on the repair. Caught out a lot of motorcyclists including me twice on roads I used at least twice a day.

Filtering.  Stupidest thing you can do on two wheels.

Going around a vehicle that is stopped for a left turn at an intersection without slowing down.  I always assume there is a vehicle coming the other way who will be making a left turn.

Clearly you guys are too removed from the '70's chopper scene..........those handlebars are a favorite safety device, "Chopper Trapeze". It allows the rider to safely rotate up, over, and forward, in the event of a crash, clearing the vehicle, landing on his feet, so he can walk over to the driver who brake-checked to beat the shit out of him. I needed those last week on I-85. But WARNING, the "Chopper Trapeze" is of limited effectiveness on RV's and Semi's.

It was clearly photoshopped but funny nonetheless. I have seen Road Glides and UltraClassics with ape hangers. Having had an Ultra I can't imagine the pain, time and cost it takes to pull that fairing off to do it. It must cost at least 5K Harley T-shirts based on daily market price.

If that's accurate, the up-side is that after a slide their fibers impart a smooth tone to aging skin. That's why I wear them anyway.

So are you saying that if you hit a traffic jam, backed up as far as the eye could see, you'd just sit there even if the gap between vehicles allowed you to use your width advantage.

As a rider from the UK I was warned by my instructor that if there was an opportunity to filter safely during my bike test and I didn't do it I would fail.

Filtering is the only logical thing to do on a bike in traffic, that is why lots of us got into bikes in the first place.  I refuse to sit in a traffic jam if I can safely filter.  I mean over there in the US you have lanes wider than the entire freeway here in CR - why not make filtering legal in all states like it is in CA?

Sliding down the right to get by two miles of bumpers, multiple times coming South from Norfolk, the only "blocks" I got were a few times of semi's straddling the shoulder way ahead, radioed by their Brother Truckers. I ain't gonna sit on a K in 96 degrees in traffic. We'll talk about "legal" later.

In SoCal, where distances are measured in time, not miles, we could cut our commutes in half by lane splitting.  I didn't mind going 10-20 mph faster than the traffic, but some whackjobs went FWO, zilch nada zero zip room for error.     I guess we're all crazy, it's just a matter of degrees.

Lane filtering was only legalised this year in QLD. For the first 6 months car drivers took exception to this, and tried to cut you off block you and drag you off at the lights. As knowledge that it was now legal filtered down most now accept it and will try and give you room. But unfortunately there are still a few idiots around, but even they seem to be  disappearing with time. However you still need to keep your wits about you and be very observant when filtering.

Most car drivers here in NZ will move over to let you through when nose to tail slow moving.A low differential speed helps convey some respect for each other's paint work.
Legal,Yeh,I'll talk about that later too.

As a rider from the UK I was warned by my instructor that if there was an opportunity to filter safely during my bike test and I didn't do it I would fail.

Filtering is perfectly safe, when executed safely and responsibly.
In 35 years of riding (25 of those being in London), I have never had any kind of incident when doing it.
Anyone who thinks it's the "stupidest" thing to do on a bike, frankly should stay in their car.

Hey go easy there. Filtering is illegal in most of the US, the only experience we have is seeing it done badly by irresponsible types.

The fact that it's not done over here also means that motorists don't expect it, don't know to look out for it, and don't respond well when they see it done.

That sucks.
So what you're saying is that in the USA, there is absolutely no point in using a motorcycle in built up congested area's.
If you have to sit in traffic, then you might as well take the car and do it in comfort.

In QLD we are limited to a speed of 30 Kph when filtering, and I believe this helps. But you need to be aware of where you can and can't filter safely . We can also use bicycle lanes at traffic lights as long as we stay 1 metre away from bicycles, which you can do most of the time. Japanese and Italian crotch rockets tend to blast through when highway traffic is stalled, but what they don't realise is that this is a trial, and if they don't follow the guide lines lane filtering could be banned.

There are plenty of us who would take exception to that statement.  I consider lane filtering a vital safety perk to the point where I feel more vulnerable when I'm riding outside the State of California.  There are many riders in California who are very responsible and don't go FWO between cars.  Some of them even ride Harleys!

I realised early on that having a slight speed difference can help "wipe"the retinas of other drivers which makes you more noticeable on fast moving but congested highways.
Also, at road junctions with the car waiting to pull out and the motorcyclist approaching that car then if the motorcyclist can wipe their retinas( as opposed to heading virtually straight for them) by actually wobbling the bike this works to improve your visability.I do this regularly as I am sure it helps remove that excuse of "I didn't see the motorcyclist coming".
