Wanted 1995 K1100RS Battery cover red.
« on: January 24, 2023, 11:07:21 PM »
My project came with battery cover that has a split mounting fixture. These have a rubber consistency. It's split down the middle...perhaps there's a glue that can bond this permanently?  I'm sceptical so hoping for a serviceable replacement...

eBay is your friend.

That is about the only upside to all the cafe hacking going on.

Now the bonus question:  I did query the seller:  Is he offering Mystic or Marrakesh colored parts. My ever skeptical/careful pal MrTenBrook views that shadowy pic and votes Mystic.  Any glue or other repair known for repairing the mount clips shaped like a clamping hand around a golf ball? Pics to follow off my phone...

Cleaver Frankenduck...resembles a broom hanger I have in inventory, I'll experiment.  Not sure that would pass tech inspection by my sanctioning body.....ok maybe I don't have one beyond verbal derision by Laitch...Great tip, thanks.

Mystic red is slightly darker and metallic.

Marakesh red is non-metallic.

No glue used . I used a tiny bolt/nut in the center to attach it. There's a scrap of 1/8" thick plastic thick in between to push it out a little. You could use fender washers as spacers instead.

I've never handled an 1100 side cover, but in my experience I suspect that they are made of the same stuff as the 1100 belly pan which is polyurethane.

You can confirm this by pulling back the insulation and looking for a molded data tag that has information about the part and should have the letters "PUR" indicating the material is Polyurethene.

3M 5200, which is a polyurethane adhesive, might work, but it will need help.  Instead of using thread I would use fine 0.010" stainless steel seizing wire.  I would also look at adding a couple reinforcing rods through the joint.  I would think that something about 0.020" would work.

About 5200, in my experience it is more of a gap filling adhesive.  If the parts have a clean break, the strongest bond may be through the use of CA glue(Super Glue).  Regardless of what I used, it would only be to hold the parts together while I made the real repair with wire reinforcements and stitching.

For more ideas, you could look for some videos related to "Bumper Facia Repair".

All good input gratefully received. CA I have tons of experience with and alas the end bond is quite brittle. polyurethane will fail at the first flex I suspect.  I'll reseach the stainess...I have some fine carbon fiber rod that might do the trick filling a drilled hole and slathered in 5200.... The 5200 is used to create hinges for RC gliders that  fly in rather strong winds to 40mph. The bonding force is terrific and creates a flexible nearly indestrucible hinge point.

Again, thanks.
