This morning I finally got to take the brick out for a real ride.
I decided to head out of the central valley and down to the coast. It is only about 60 miles and is a pretty decent road - at least early on a Sunday morning it is. Not so much twisties more fast sweepers which suits me just fine. The bike went pretty well, though the engine definitely needs tweaking. Past about 6000 rpm if I closed the throttle the bike tended to back fire once. Still seems a little low on acceleration and torque as well. Don't get me wrong, it still goes fine, but 80 mph was more where she wanted to cruise not 120 mph.
I stopped at the famous (in Costa Rica anyway) Tarcoles bridge to take a few photos of the crocs. Then on to the beach, a nice cold drink, then home. I am still getting used to how warm bricks are, I kept on checking the temp gauge because my left leg was telling me she was about to explode!

Thanks, it does look tremendous, though it gave me a fright when it flew open at 80 mph... :mbird luckily I didn't have anything valuable in it at the time! :riding:

Nice!!! You did a stellar job on that bike.
Don't worry about the engine. I will bet that a couple bottles of Techron over 3-4 months will have it all sorted nicely.
Yes, It would be nice to see a real palm tree up close. So far, winter has been pretty easy here. Only 6 weeks until riding season now, and I'm sure I'll get a day or two in during February since I bought some good cold weather riding gear. I just need to see some dry, salt free roads.

If I am totally honest I prefer a cold dry sunny day to the heat here. You can dress for the cold but there is not much you can do for the heat except not where the kit and whilst I am not a ATGATT fiend I do insist on jacket, gloves and lid. Trust me, there was a good reason I set off at 7.30 am and was home by 10.30, right now at noon it is close to 100 f at the beach.

I've looked down on those Crocs from that bridge. Been to Jaco. You have a great country. Keep those ride reports coming! Now I'm going to go sit in the hot tub and dream of Costa Rica.

Miles (and some Techron) might be all your engine needs. These bikes love to run!

I think what you might do to combat the heat is to pull off the fairing, install a slick LED headlamp then pull off the instrument cluster that would be the last impediment to the breeze, and wire up a tiny Acewell speedo. The place isn't the same without your project updates, Filmcamera. :giggles

Queensland has probably similar heat problems. I don't wear black in summer, have now got a grey fully vented jacket with armour, vented gloves, Kevlar lined jeans, breathable lace up hiking boots. I have a Camel Back that I 2/3 fill and freeze, I then top it up with water, you need to put it at an angle to stop the lid from freezing closed. Mine has a very large neck opening and if you freeze 1.25 lt soda bottle of water you can use them to top up. You just cut open the bottle once it has defrosted a bit, and top up with water.You can also get a neck scarf that contains a water absorbing gel, once soaked it releases water, and does keep you cooler. You can also get a gel vest, I haven't tried one but I knew one person who swore by his.

its not the colour... its the material...
motoport stretch kevlar does not absorb heat like leather or cordura...
a white stretch kevlar jacket laying beside a black stretch kevlar jacket in the sun... whatcha think... nope they are the same temperature...

Actually the best thing I found is that my Bell helmet has one of those drop down tinted lenses built in. Unless I am doing silly speeds it provides enough wind protection to allow me to leave the visor up which vastly increases the amount of cooling air entering the helmet and keep the old noggin cold.
My Rev-it airwave 2 jacket does a pretty good job of keeping me cool - I just need a Johnny type solution and never go less than 100 mph - preferably in third

Thanks JO I have a laser temp gun and a black jacket and the grey one, both cordura I think. Might do a test on the weekend and see what happens.

Jacket was a lucky craigslist find!!! @1/3 price :bmwsmile Glad to see the bike checking out. I gotta admit the extra valves+cc s you got there are tempting for my next bike :riding: . +1 ride early and late. If you ride late, might need a light upgrade...Lots of info here.

Lights are coming for sure - I wanted to go with Catz for authenticity but not only are they nearly $300 I couldn't find them in white.
So I am thinking the other end of the scale now, white LED's for $20

I was confronted with the same dilemma, price won! My aging eyes love led white light. The conspicuous argument is valid, but I drive where there are few people, AND, I assume that everyone/thing is trying to kill me!

A mesh jacket with armor and a gel vest underneath is the way to go in the heat. But you need to soak the vest every couple hours to keep it working.
There are a lot of 10W Cree LED driving lights on eBay. The lights I have on my bikes are $30 and free shipping for a pair. I mount them on the fairing under the headlight just in front of the cutout for the forks.
