Title: K75s midlife refresh
Post by: K1300S on January 18, 2016, 08:52:51 PM

starting a project thread rather than keep posting in "what did you do today" area...

the original pics when i got in sep15

about 35k miles.

did compression check
temp fixed cracked crankcase breather hose (new one on the slow train from maxbmw)
TB's synched
choke and idle adjusted

then added new lic plate, not very original, but...
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20151107_185256.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20151107_185256.jpg.html)

matches this one in seattle, owned by brother..
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/seattle/20150607_111211.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/seattle/20150607_111211.jpg.html)

moved it to the shop for some maint..
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20151101_120346.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20151101_120346.jpg.html)

first up...spark plugs.  same plugs as an S14.
old ones not too bad, but had been in there a long time.  the caps that go into the wires were totally corroded.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20151101_120943.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20151101_120943.jpg.html)

noticed one of the reasons the idle may be off, cracked crankcase vent hose...unmetered air going into airbox.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20151101_132633.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20151101_132633.jpg.html)

main airbox to manifold hose needs replacing also.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20151101_132648.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20151101_132648.jpg.html)

on to the brakes...full fluid flush front and rear.  this had not been done in a while either.  no way to use a pressure bleeder, but you can squeeze the brake lever/pedal with one hand while working the bleed valve with the other.  ez.  Moto MC's sure don't push much fluid.

rear abs
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20151101_134501.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20151101_134501.jpg.html)

rear brake
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20151101_135401.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20151101_135401.jpg.html)

front MC on handlebar
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20151101_142320.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20151101_142320.jpg.html)

nasty old fluid
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20151101_161820.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20151101_161820.jpg.html)

then took the "barbacks" off.  these aftermarket devices move the handlebars up and back about an inch and a half for a more upright riding position.  not my style.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20151101_145434.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20151101_145434.jpg.html)

done
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20151101_151246.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20151101_151246.jpg.html)

then i changed the final drive oil to redline 75w90 and the transmission oil to redline MTL.

everything is so small!  not used to working things other than cars.

i understand the need for motorcycle lifts now though.  even sitting on the floor it is a pain in the knees and back to work on this thing!

will get to the throttle body adjustment next.

removed every light fixture front and back, cleaned inside and out, cleaned all connections, replaced all bulbs with new and tested.  it is amazing what just this simple maintenance does for brightness....on a bike or a car.

found that a PO had done an early upgrade to make the tail/brake light more visible.  changed all the bulbs and sockets to use dual filament  1157 bulbs.  took me a few minutes to figure out the wiring and compare to shop manuals to see what was going on.

these were actually added lights in an unused part of the tail lens for the brakes.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20151121_123355.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20151121_123355.jpg.html)

(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20151121_165123.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20151121_165123.jpg.html)

and of course, while i was in there, i added a Skene Design P3 rear LED light.  light is a "third brake light" that flashes on brake application, then goes solid really bright.  it is also an always on tail light at lower intensity.
http://www.lights.skenedesign.com/P3_Features.shtml

I also have a Skene "photon booster" amber LED setup i will be installing on the front forks.  Visibility is a good thing!
http://www.lights.skenedesign.com/Photon_Booster.shtml

started replacing the alternator drive bushings.  ya gotta take a bunch of the middle of the bike apart to pull the alternator out.

(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20151206_165447.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20151206_165447.jpg.html)

it is buried down deep.
20151206_171039.jpg (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20151206_171039.jpg.html)

here are the rubber drive bushings which in K bike slang are called "monkey nutz".  here is alternator side.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20151206_171039.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20151206_171039.jpg.html)

these look original to the bike and are dead. there are no belts to drive the alt.  the alt is drive by gears through two three pronged couplers with the monkey nutz absorbing the shock between the two.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20151206_171755.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20151206_171755.jpg.html)

here is the engine side of the coupler
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20151206_173449.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20151206_173449.jpg.html)

finished the alt bushing replacement.  of course had to paint all the parts that were removed.

after changing the dead monkey nutz, made a mount for my NUVI traffic GPS.

some aluminum i had laying around, a hacked up garmin car dash top mount, cig lighter socket, paint and some bolts.

valve lash check time.

procedure is just like on an S14, just fewer valves and different special tools.  unfortunately all the exhaust valves were way too tight.  ordered a bunch of shims, put it back together and went for a ride.

valve bucket tools from Ken (Kenneth Lively [polepenhollow@yahoo.com])  work great!  the one on the left rotates to depress the valve bucket, the one on the right holds the bucket down so you can R&R the shims.

these are going to RC Engineering for cleaning
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160109_163925.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160109_163925.jpg.html)

some quality time spend in the laundry room sink.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160109_174935.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160109_174935.jpg.html)

original project goal is to replace all fuel and cooling hoses, and replace the brake soft lines.

more progress today.
TB going back together.  replaced all the hoses.  did initial setting of the TPS
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160110_132306.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160110_132306.jpg.html)

added the little switch for the choke light.  not much room for it..
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160110_135359.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160110_135359.jpg.html)

cut all the wire ties, wiped down all the wires, took apart and cleaned all the connections.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160110_154642.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160110_154642.jpg.html)

then drained coolant and removed all the coolant hoses.  or tried to.  looks like i will have to cut the one that goes through the crankcase cover to get it out.  will new one slide in?  waiting on the new ones to arrive.

changed the original clutch cable (30k miles).  old one didn't seem bad, i just had a new one available.  wow!  new one is so much smoother!

then replaced all the coolant hoses (they too were original).  the combo of dish soap and lengthwise folding made getting the crank cover hose in easy!
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160116_175041.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160116_175041.jpg.html)

then reassembled the throttle bodies and installed.

front brake line replacement and some wiring tomorrow.  injectors due back from RCEngineering this week.

front brake lines replaced with Spiegler braided.

ok, back of bike came apart today.  need to lube the splines on both ends of the drive shaft and the tranny input shaft.

Marshall really a thorough job, you have done yourself proud, and well documented. I use a home made vacuum bleeder, it is on the forum but you can buy them. As far as the lift table goes I couldn't agree more. I just finished building my own version really makes life easy, don't know how I did without it. You will definitely benefit with one, or your back & knees will. Nice bike great colour.
Keep up the good work Martin.

Serious garage envy going on here. I have no garage in which to work on the bike, let alone a spacious, well-ordered place like yours. Thanks for documenting your work so well, it really helps to demystify jobs when people do that.

Great write-up and pics ... thanks for sharing. I was interested in the infamous monkey-nutz as I had not seen, but read a lot about these. Strange that there are 6 rubbers but only 3 fins ... so presumably could be rotated to the next 3 slots if worn ..?

I think the battery clamp should be flipped, Marshall, which would also necessitate removing and reinstalling the rubber coolant tank hold-down. The clamp's flange doesn't touch the battery.

If only Clymer's photos could be as clear as yours instead of their halftones with white arrows pointing into black holes indicating "details."

I think I like owning a C. No ABS in the way (though I like the safety provided by it), no rear brake caliper...trans removal is pretty easy

Most definitely I had  a Honda 500T in the spare bedroom while wife was in Melbourne, I was living in the Latrobe valley and it was winter and no garage. So what's a guy to do when you have a nice warm spare bedroom. A word of warning put down lots of newspaper, and if anything goes wrong blame the dog ( even if you don't have one It should confuse her ).Old saying  it is easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission.

BillDay, that choke light is pretty handy if your mental powers are as weak as mine.  I have rode my brick all day with the choke on.  The light is a good reminder.  I've done all three of my bricks.  They all have the bulb and the wiring, all you need to do is add the switch.  It's a bit of a pain to install, but definitely worthwhile, especially for us senior citizens.
Title: Re: K75s midlife refresh

Luckily, it's not a true choke, but a throttle advance. So leaving it on only affects the bike at idle.
Title: Re: K75s midlife refresh
Post by: kris on January 22, 2016, 10:59:55 AM
I find my choke wants to come off of the full setting all by itself. Even at the midpoint click it seems to want to come off. I have yet to forget my choke...and my light works. Somewhere in these threads there is mention of "start and ride" with these bikes. Heinz doesn't really need a warm-up although I usually give her a couple of minutes and then ride easy for a bit.

As for parts-warshing in the house/ laundry tub/ basement shower!!....get the damn smell out before she gets back. And if she asks, "What's that smell???"....deny, deny, deny! Then respond, "I don't smell anything."

Good luck.

Kris, do you have the detent ball and spring installed in the choke lever and the detent plate installed in the clutch housing?  Missing either if these will leave the choke loose as you describe.

Robert, I overstated the notion of the choke coming off on it's own. Certainly at the high end it will come off to the midpoint, but I don't like her revving that high on a cold start anyway. It will easily hold at the first click but I (maybe subconsciously!!) pull it off within seconds of pulling away. It's a pleasure to be able to do that on the Brick, as opposed to the Kawi...she needs a little more warm up with those carbs.

i looked at that reflector location, but the angle is too raked back.  the LED's are pretty directional and have to be more vertical.

went for the under fairing location.  took some .5 x.5 in aluminum angle, cut 6in piece, drilled holes for the center mounting screw, light bar mounting studs and the wires.  painted with a couple coats of satin chassis black rattle can paint i had in stock.

(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160126_203148.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160126_203148.jpg.html)

mounted lights to bar, then attached to fairing using the center fairing screw on bottom.  no drilling of fairing.

wired module to take power off the parking light bulb plugs and lit it up.  yeow are they bright!  with the characteristic Skene flicker.

Extra light would seem to be helpful but you already have a bright head light in that position, Marshall. I thought those lights were designed for conspicuity, and conspicuity to approaching traffic is theoretically aided by a triangularity of lighting. Are you planning to add other front lighting?
Title: Re: K75s midlife refresh
Post by: K1300S on January 28, 2016, 12:47:31 PM
yes, the theory is that the farther you spread the lights, the "bigger" a target you appear.  I'll try them where they are for now.   need to get the bike outside in the dark with the headlight on to see how visible the lights and the "flicker" are.  I did leave enough wire on the modules that I can easily drop them down to the brake caliper mount points later with about 10 minutes of zip tie work and 8mm hex.

no additional lighting planned other than upping the wattage on the stock H4 and shifting headlight to a relay.

I've got a Kisantech headlight modulator. It wakes up drivers at intersections when I'm turning but I shut it down behind cars in stopped traffic. I like it for long stretches of two lane where there's a higher possibility of a frustrated oncoming driver's passing somebody. That flashing headlight gets some attention.
Title: Re: K75s midlife refresh
Post by: The Mighty Gryphon on January 28, 2016, 08:19:20 PM
I had one of those headlight modulators and took it off after one season.  The flashing seemed to make other drivers pull over and slow down when I approached them from behind.  As I went by them, I frequently got annoyed looks, probably because flashing the headlight is a request to allow a faster vehicle to pass, and my headlight is flashing constantly.

I didn't think it was a good idea to antagonize other drivers when their vehicles are so much larger than mine.

If you're going that route, also replace the stock plastic H4 bulb connector with an aftermarket ceramic equivalent.  The OEM connector tends to melt from the heat of H4's exceeding standard spec 55/60.

Never had that experience, Gryph, but I don't run them all the time either. Don't feel the need but, like I say, they stand out on the long, lonesome roads where people can tend to drift off.

Post by: The Mighty Gryphon on January 28, 2016, 08:57:05 PM
Yeah, I do a lot of expressway commuting, and thought the flash would help with my survivability.  That was really the only place I really wanted it, and it was where it seemed to annoy other drivers the most.   I wound up turning it off almost all the time.

The last straw was how it would somehow flash the high beam at night, usually when I was riding in deer country and really wanted the extra beam power.  Since I replaced it with a pair of 10w LED lights I haven't really missed it.

It sounds like you had a lemon, Gryph. The sensor on mine works reliably. Never use mine on expressways, mostly for oncoming, close quarters.

finished up the LED wiring, then put tank back on and started her up.  yuck!  when you mess with everything, it runs like crap!  went through full set up process with choke set, fuel pressure check TB balance and idle adjust.  much better.

simple stuff today.  the original plug wires had corroded to the plugs when i changed the plugs.  not sure if they had ever been off in 22 years...  got new NGK wires from amazon.

If you insist in using those leads, you will forever live in fear and your bike will be damned. Any day now might computer is going to blow and send me to hell.

The dress of the plug leads doesn't look right.  The lead for the #3 cylinder is too sharply bent.  It should enter the space across the top along with the other leads, and then curve down to approach the plug from the bottom.

time for the headlight circuit upgrade.  got the Eastern Beaver  "hardwire" version.  very nice quality, shipped from Japan.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160221_100640.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160221_100640.jpg.html)

unplug and remove the stock bulb socket.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160221_105419.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160221_105419.jpg.html)

cut off the connectors, strip back the yellow and white (the hardest part of this whole job since the wires are short) and connect to the EB harness with the twist locks. notice the shrink tube already on the EB harness.  used heat gun to shrink it after making the connections.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160221_111303.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160221_111303.jpg.html)

I hated to cut off the very nice power wires on the EB harness with mini fuse holder, but i had already run fused power from the battery when i had the bike apart.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160221_105929.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160221_105929.jpg.html)

SNIP!  then used some connectors to join the stub of the EB harness with my power wires.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160221_112930.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160221_112930.jpg.html)

tucked the wires up into the fairing, tie wrapped them in there and turned the key.  Light!  all works fine.  will get a higher wattage bulb at future date.

Marshall after sixteen years of going to fit relays. I finally fitted them while my fairing was off undergoing repair. I managed to do it without cutting into the original wires, and I bought a new ceramic H4  plug. After checking the light output in the garage, and thinking great improvement, it was a disappointment on the road. I will now chase up better globes.

lesson for today...just because an old part looks ok does not mean it IS ok...

been chasing the tuning on the bike since I did the rehab.  clearly running lean.  did the propane test.  definitely an air leak around the base of #3. hmm.  only parts i did not replace were the lower "gaskets" between the TB's and the head.  i had taken one of them off and it looked good.  oh well, ordered three new ones...and...took the whole top of the engine apart again.

(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160306_141405.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160306_141405.jpg.html)

sure enough, the old ones were original and although soft, there is a raised built in "o-ring" on the bottom of these things.  20 years of being snugged against the hot head had resulted in them being flattened.  no seal.

(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160306_141417.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160306_141417.jpg.html)

new ones

will test run and retune later this week.

project #2...when i went to put a 100/55w bulb in the head light, the old bulb just fell out.  some prior owner had broken the metal locking lever off the lens.  argh!  bought new one.  OUCH!

broken one.  you can see where an attempt to glue was done at some point.

but wait...while i was in there..bought a larger hella horn to replace the anemic stock one.  ez replacement, much louder!

Marshall locking ring is common to all Hella H4 lights including cars, you can get them from the wreckers. A couple of weeks ago I was in getting other bits for a mates car and asked for one, they didn't even charge for it.

will pick one up and repair the lens i have as a spare.  heck, i have a few old round H4 bulbs in a bin somewhere....

as soon as i got the lens out of the bike where i could see it, i saw that you could probably just bend the tabs up and take the lock ring off.  oh well, already had a pretty new lens!

after the RTE this morning, got inspired to install the Fox spring/shock.  pretty easy.  hydraulic line was just barely long enough to go through battery area and get the reservoir past the Z bracket.

a bit of difference in size (and weight!) from stock..

did not have the right size hose clamps, so temporarily used some heavy duty zip ties to secure to frame rail
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160327_171739.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160327_171739.jpg.html)

then set sag...no idea what spring rate came on this shock, but it works out to be pretty good for my weight.

I have one of those shocks on my K100RS, and would really like to know how to go about tuning the damping adjustments on it.  So far I have them pretty much at the lower end of the settings(I think) and will be riding the bike to see what they do.   Right now, the ride on the 100 feels better than either of my 75's which have Works Performance shocks.  The compression damping on the Works shocks is not adjustable and is a lot harsher on the crap pavement I do a lot of my riding on.

Has anyone here set up a Fox Twin Clicker on their brick?

so, my FOX "double clickers" are "single clickers".  the rebound knob turned, but no clicks.  supposed to have 36 positions.  removed shock from bike to test to see if shock was working.

spring compressors on to access lock ring.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160402_123203.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160402_123203.jpg.html)
and there is the little lock ring that comes out allowing the spring to be pulled off.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160402_123311.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160402_123311.jpg.html)

got it apart...shock is working fine.  plenty of gas pressure and the rebound knob does have a major effect on the performance, even without the clicks.  put it all back together and back on bike.

anyone know how many turns of the adjuster equals the 36 clicks it is supposed to have?

after riding around a bit yesterday, already like the Fox setup.  even with the adjustments just ballparked in the middle, the bike feels much more taught and controlled,  but is not harsh.  It will be fun to play with!

BTW - huge recommendation out for Mike at Carver Performance for the rebuild and the support.  both he and his staff have been great to work with!  Fox does not support these shocks anymore.  They recommended Mike and before I even had a chance to call him, Mike had already sent me an email offering to help.

Heading to asheville, NC in a month for a vintage BMW car show,  but taking the beemer instead of one of the bimmers.  So...needed to do a couple more updates before hitting the twisty bits.

Tech update first....added SENA 10u to the shoei.(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160423_130148.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160423_130148.jpg.html)

Then went for some front suspension upgrades.   Oil and springs.  I did not know when oil had been changed last or what it was.

Also thought the springs were stock,  so bought some racetech single rates.  Got the old springs out to find.....they were Progressives!  Pic of the two together.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160424_143231.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160424_143231.jpg.html)

Oh well, put the racetech's in anyway.
Pulling spring caps.  19 mm socket works great for pushing them down.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160424_153323.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160424_153323.jpg.html)

Had to make some new spacers.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160424_143340.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160424_143340.jpg.html)

230mm
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160424_145035.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160424_145035.jpg.html)

Filling with 410ml of honda ss8 10wt.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160424_151540.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160424_151540.jpg.html)

Put it all back together and checked sag.  25mm, which is just about what I was looking for.

No chance for testing yee ha yet...next weekend!

Tested the yeeeha factor of the new suspension today.

Like!

No îdea what fork oil was in it...it was a dirty blue color.  It was about 410ml.  Between the ss8-10w and the racetech springs, bike feels much better than with the Progressive springs.  Ride is taught, but not harsh and brake dive noticeably less.

decided to fix the trashed splines on the driveshaft.  ordered an Ei driveshaft from Ted's Beemershop.  arrived in less than a week.  yeah!
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160916_190214.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160916_190214.jpg.html)

planned install this morning before a ride tomorrow.  bad idea.

got the old one out by pulling the final drive and pulling.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160917_123139.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160917_123139.jpg.html)

shocking the amount of slop in the joint between the diff and the DS with the old DS compared to the Ei one.  this is going to be great!.

went to put the new one in...not gonna go.
new u-joints way too big to fit the easy way.   argh.  have to remove whole carrier and insert from front.
more mess and time i had not planned on.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160917_132839.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160917_132839.jpg.html)

what a pita.  driveshaft would not go on and "snap" lock in.  finally got it on and DS would not go straight.  flexed it up...felt something snap.  took whole dang thing apart again.

DS was built incorrectly.  grease nipple was on the wrong side of joint.  it was interfering with the end of the tranny output shaft....and broke off.
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/mblytle/K75S%20black/20160917_144106.jpg) (http://s397.photobucket.com/user/mblytle/media/K75S%20black/20160917_144106.jpg.html)

now i have disassembled bike and no driveshaft.  (not going to put the trashed old one back in)

Ted was helpful on the phone, but i got the last DS he had in stock. he is going to deal with manufacturer this week to get a replacement.

Shite!
Can't you get rid of the snapped off nipple and carry on assembling.I can't remember having that facility for greasing the needle rollers on my original drive shaft so...

If you can find one they can be replaced with a hex plug. My side stand had one which I replaced with a grease nipple. I've also seen an Allen plug try a bearing shop.

Long time since update.

Final drive splines were toast.   Had the whole unit rebuilt.   Much better.  No more slop in driveline and it shifts much smoother.

On the long test ride..... blew out the left fork seal.  Refreshed both of them.   Simple task.

Take it apart.

Oh, while it was laid up over the winter, also put EBC rotors and HH pads on front and rear.

And it got a set of new Pilot Active tires.

And a new old stock seat.

Damn!  That's a nice shop you work in.

I'm too embarrassed to take many photos of where I work on my bikes.  Have to do a lot of cropping to get the background out of them.

I just read through your entire build.
A great thread you got going and an awesome machine youve built for yourself.  Good work bud.

I just finished a lot of the same work you did, on my own 87 K75.

I will be looking to upgrade suspension next winter.

Wondering if you still got the barbacks laying around and if you would be interested to move them out of your way?

thanks.  this thread actually covers three different shops...early part was the 16x24 shop at my old house.  mid part was in my garage under current house.  latter part is in the new shop i just had built last fall.  my "garage mahal" pre-retirement present.

Trek - barbacks not available, sorry.

Martin - the corbin seat is a nice long distance touring seat.  like sitting in a spoon.   it is not as nice for performance riding.  the spoon style restricts the ability to slide off the seat to the side.  you are kinda stuck in the middle.    stock seat makes it easy to shift weight side to side and is actually quite comfortable.   downside is that comfort only seems to last about 3-4hrs, then the "square" edges start poking the back of my thighs.   I plan to do a few track days on the brick, so wanted another seat option besides the corbin.    will use the corbin for longer jaunts.

Stock seat came from my brother's 93 K75S.  It was used for 3k miles, then stored carefully...so it is basically new.

time for a little fun with the old brick....going to a track day at Summit Point tomorrow!

spent the day prepping the bike.
brake bleed
delete mirrors
tape headlight
pull fuses for head and parking lights
disable the Skene LED conspicuity lights front and rear
empty all the storage cubbies
check tire pressure
general "nut and bolt" check of whole bike

then prepped the bike trailer, loaded up, and ready to go in the morning!

i would have taken the "evil twin", but not confident in the ABS or clutch yet. still have some work to do on it.

YEEEE HAAAAAA!
what a great day!  wx was great, track fun and big group of like minded fools...

about 100 miles at 7500-8500 rpm.  tires are worn edge to edge.  both right and left foot pegs are ground down a bit from dragging in turns.

the old brick did great!  oldest bike there by far, with the skinniest tires.  by the end of the day we were running down new liter bikes and track prepped Ninjas with fat tires.  granted, it was the novice group, but....

michelin sport activ tires were impressive.  very grippy.

EBC rotors and EBC HH pads hauled the brick down time after time.

race-tek front springs and FOX rear setup was very stable and predictable.

only two issues.
- the #1 cyl TB balance screw vibrated out 3 turns.  realized it when idle was too high.  dialed it back in and all was better.
- think the stock clutch does not like repeated up and down shifts at 8500rpm.  seemed to be slipping going from 3 to 4.

loaded up..ready for MORE!!!

Hi: I have read this post with great interest, as it is a serious collection of good info about things to do on a bike that is exactly as mine, including color.  Thanks.

I have one question for the main contributor: how much of a pain is to disassemble the whole intake side? I have an air leak (can hear it) and want to get rid of it. The bike idles fine, so I assume is the Hose between the air filter and manifold, but want to replace all rubber components if I get to it.

Thanks again for the advice.

glad the info is useful!

first i would check to see exactly where the leak is so you know how much to take apart.  best way i have used is a little torch propane bottle.  start bike, turn propane on a little, and point it at the various parts and hoses of the intake system.  if the idle goes up anytime in the process, the torch is pointing at the leak.

taking bike apart to get at all the hoses and manifolds is not hard (especially the second time....), it just takes time.  gotta get the tank off first (like for so many other procedures), then the airfilter/afm box, then whatever else is needed to get the the problem.  if ya gotta go in for one hose, do them all while you are in there.....both gas lines and the intake lines.  you don't want to got back in there again.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I took the tank off but since the air box is below the down tubes of the frame, I did not see an easy way. Will look at the manuals but if you have any tips, appreciated.

gotta get the airfilter out, then you have enough play to disconnect the upper half of the airbox from the hose and the AFM and remove it.  bottom half unbolts from top of crankcase.

hopefully the last person to remove this installed the hose clamp on the intake hose correctly (oriented "up") so that you can get it with a long screwdriver through the wiring on the top of the bike.

Thanks

you refering to the Z-hose crankcase breather?  then yup.  degreaser and elbow grease.  WD40 actually works well for cleaning this up too.

Alternatively, you can get the air filter out, then make yourself just enough room to get an allen wrench in there to unfasten the bottom half of the airbox from the engine block. Leave the top half hanging there and you don't have to mess with disconnecting and reconnecting the AFM etc. I forget all the details but I've done it that way and it works.
