Mine is a 91 RS which had been either neglected of mangled by the PO and hadn't run for at least two years when I got it. It took a couple of months but now it runs great and I am actually glad I needed to put some work into it to get it back on the road running right.  I now really know the bike and get much more satisfaction out of it knowing I got it working again myself.  So yes buy it, these bikes are pretty bullet proof and no matter what you will end up with a great bike.

If you are willing to spend time and money restoring it.

You have 159 posts worth of understanding about what to expect from used bricks. >50K miles indicates that it hasn't been abandoned like Filmcamera's bike was. I bought my bike with no service records, but because it had no rust, was parked in a dry space, and the owner was forthcoming and cordial during my interview, I bought it. Following the guidelines here for bringing used bikes into service—including an input spline lube—was all I needed to do.

At least you have a Honda to ride while you mull this over.

It ain't whether you should buy it or not.... The questions is, whether you should buy it for anything remotely close to the asking price?

What's the condition? Pics? Fluid levels/condition? Tire age/condition? Does it run? How's the battery? There are some great specimens out there for less.

Good luck, and enjoy the hunt!

I would say that in this day in age, buying a used K with well-documented maintenance records is the exception rather than the norm.

I was fortunate enough to be able to contact the PPO (previous, previous, owner), who owned it for much longer than the owner immediately previous to me. He had really no obligation to deal with me, but he was helpful in telling me at least what had been done recently, and what hadn't. Having said that, I would have still bought it in any event.

Red flags for me are usually RTV sealant and JB Weld, zip ties and other garbage holding things together. Sometimes a quick visual inspection can tell you most of what a written service record would.

Don't engage in nonsense posing.

Drive over there with cash, a means of taking the bike with you and bargain in good faith with a reasonable offer. If this is the bike, it seems worth the effort. You should plan on upgrading to the larger alternator—a useful upgrade.

I wouldn't dawdle either. I can't see its being available too long near that price with good weather around, if it starts and runs well.

$2400 isn't a bad price for a naked K this time of year. If it starts and runs well and doesn't look like it fell off the back of a dump truck a brick of that vintage is a good deal.  From what I have seen, naked 75's can go for even more than the S models.

With warm weather on the doorstep in this part of the world, bike fever will be on the rise as well as interest in bikes for sale.  If I was in the market, I'd be all over that one in the picture.

The ad says low seat the the pictures are of the standard height seat.  Looks like a good price.  This is what a low seat looks like

Over here 2400 would buy you a very pristine example so in my mind the price is a bit steep. Otoh 56k is hardly run in for those things so if that's a reasonable price over there i wouldn't worry over the maintenance history. Bought mine scary cheap, without history 3 years ago with 350k on her. Best bike i've had in years!

yes, I thought the low seat lost the battery cover plastic bits. I'm going to go look it over now.

low seat model. I'm tall.
Like Chaos asserts, that's not a K-bike low seat. That's a custom low-seat on a standard height seat pan. A standard seat will easily fit as a substitute, if that's what you think you want after you mount up.

Simply buy a ragged standard on the Web then ride up to Wisconsin and get it Taintilized, if that's really what happens up there.  Eating Raoul comes to mind as an alternative outcome though. :giggles

Huh? I don't think I've ever bought a brick that DID have maintenance records...oh yeah, one. I never looked at the maintenance records.

None of my bricks came with service records.  So far, I guess I have been lucky in that paying a bit more for a bike in running condition has resulted in reliable machines with a minimum of additional work.

My RS had issues, but it ran pretty well and had a reasonable price that reflected the ratty cosmetics.

I keep pretty detailed records of the work I have done on these bikes, just so I can remember what and when I have done things.  The memory just isn't what it used to be.

yes, I thought the low seat lost the battery cover plastic bits. I'm going to go look it over now.
I drove 2 hours each way to see the bike.
It has a low seat and handlebar[chrome] set up and felt like driving a crotch rocket. There was a gap between the seat and tank that the owner filled with a custom piece. It was hard as a rock, maybe some padding was removed?
The only original paint was on the front fender, the rest was not up to BMW quality. The brake rotors were pitted. The bike had sat for years before being sold to owner. The front brakes were spongy, I could get the lever to the bar without any significant braking. The back worked fine. The bags had silver covers and attachments were modified.
It did have new tires and the owner had recently painted the engine.
The motor and tranny worked great, really made me sorry I sold mY K75s and didn't drag it cross country with me.
Too many issues for the $ for me. Now I'm on the lookout for an unmolested K75. Anyone want to sell me one of your "extras"?
