My project, 1992 K1100LT

Hi guys,

I bought my first  :bmwsmile motorcycle a couple months ago. This is what it looked like. Pretty clean, and smooth running, but not perfect.



Paint is very good, now all I had to do was to strip it down and start improving it...




I gave it a good wash, and am now ready to start. Actually I realy like the streetfighter look of the bike without fairings, but I bought the BMW because I already own a naked Honda CBX1000Z. Maybe I'll get a K75 one day... Who knows? Actually, the K75 got me here... I was looking for one, but then this K1100 made sense.

I am cleaning it in detail, slowly, taking my time, hydrating everything plastic with silicone and (one of my favourite products for old plastic and rubber) leather conditioner.

Today it was time for some detail painting.

Front brake area was a little ugly, so it needed some sanding and respray.



The engine looked... Well, it looked like it's 25 years old:



So I painted the engine covers with high temperature paint. Painted the silver screws as well (took 5 at a time from each side).
This is midway through the process:





And then here is the end result:

Today I took the seat off, it's not closing properly. A small clamp fell down near the battery, so it was the perfect opportunity to dismantle several parts and see how everything works.

I cannot see rusty stuff and put it back on the bike, so I had to do something about it. Metal brush to grind rust:

And then I painted everything black but forgot to take a picture...

Assembled everything properly and now the seat is perfect (there was a screw missing and it was all wobbly).

On second thoughts... I could have covered the rubber bits...  :dunno

Plastic washing day. I also washed the chrome bars, gave them a good polish (a bit rusty they were...) and they look good now.

If the black plastic bits are badly damaged by the sun you can bring them back by painting with a light coat of flat black followed by a matte finish clear coat made for wheels. 

Start with two coats of adhesion promoter, then two coats of flat black, followed by three coats of clear.  I used the Dupli-Color brand, and with 10 minutes between coats the whole job is done and ready to handle in an hour and a half.  The parts look like they just came from the molding machine.

Try two coats of Forever Black bumper and trim treatment, and finish with a couple of coats of Surf City's Black Max. The Black max seems to soak in and is non greasy, it also protects against UV. I reapply it every 2-3 weeks using one of those cloth applicator pads and a strip of Wettex sponge for the nooks and crannies.

Fuel + Temp gauges restoration.

Hi guys, today I decided to try to make these aux clocks usable. They weren't!

By the way, they were made in my country, side stickers say "Made in Portugal"...

Worse was the left one, fuel gauge:



I started by cutting it:





And found this plastic layer inside, half dettached:



I removed the plastic, wet sanded the inside, then I polished it, and closed it with electrical tape:



And here's the final result. Not perfect, but perfectly usable!!!

Looks good. I restored a plexiglas windshield on a '68 boat with the Novus 7100 3 step system after wet sanding with up to 2000 grit and rubbing compound by hand. Nice bike!

Today I put a new clutch cable. Spent 2euro on that...  :mbird


All in all I guess I've spent some 25 euro on it. And LOTS of elbow grease...

Great you do more effort than Euros.€2 seems real good value for a clutch cable even in sunny Portugal. :riding:

2€ is what I paid for a universal internal cable, which I had to cut, but it works just as well as an original one...

Update:

Sprayed some High Temp Motip laquer on the engine, and started putting everything back together.

Removed stereo, antenna, speakers. Put some foamy rubber stickers between fairings to minimize noise.

Put new rubbers where the fairings touch the tank on the side, and in the front of the side panels. Got these for free in a car shop.

Polished all the dirty screws, bolts & washers with my metal brush, here's an example, half done:



Put all the fairings and the chrome protections. All tight and it looks and sounds good and solid!

Unfortunately gas clock is not working... Maybe I damaged it...

I didn't need to spend money on this. The bike was pretty clean. I guess I spent 30€ tops...

The bike had a recent service (previous owner did it), new filters, fluids, plugs etc recently, so I guess it's time to ride now!!!!  :clap:

It was time go give the brakes a good clean, sanding and paint.

The front brakes were making the noises they make when the bobbins are worn, so I took them apart, ordered 1 set of 12 new bobbins, chose the best 12 used ones to mount everything right without spending a lot of money.

So this is what they looked like:

 

I sanded them:



Put all the bobbins, bending the washers a bit, so that they become springy. Painted the interior in original black, and this is the end result:


I was a bit afraid that I might have damaged the disks, as I sanded them hard, but no, they're smoother than ever.

What did you use to sand them? Have you laid a straight-edge on their surface to determine if they are flat or cupped?

I sanded them with a grinder, but with a sandpaper disk on it. I tested them with a straight edges tool and they looked fine, but I only believed when I tried the brakes @ 120km/h and they were smoother than ever.


Unfortunately I did not San the pads, and they were dirty, but I did it later.


There is almost no movement of the disks if I push / pull them by hand, and they make no noise when riding.

Damn... Some guy decided to reverse his car and my baby went down... It was parked, just fell over. But you know what can happen on a heavy k11 when it falls over.


Fortunately his insurance is paying for it. Took it to local BMW and they quoted 4000euro... Pretty ridiculous, but who cares?!


Unfortunately the front fairing is not produced anymore, so they are fixing mine. Not THAT much damage, but it's being repaired and someone is paying 3970€... 😅

Damn!  How you got his license and information to make an insurance claim.


BTW, the floating disks should move a bit.  There should be some movement side to side of the disk relative to the carrier, however no rotational movement relative. Is that what you have got??

My disks move a bit yes, but no noise now.

So, I just got my K1100 from BMW today, service completed 66.666km and they changed oil, transmission oil,  fork oil, etc, etc, etc.

It was also repaired from the accident (it was parked and some guy knocked it over).

The bike is fixed, looks good, new right side, best thing is they put a new front screen, mine was a bit yellow :) but I was a bit disappointed with BMW's service actually... Several details were overlooked, like they forgot to change a footpeg, a broken blinker, and some parts weren't really put on properly, anyway... Good thing I can use spanners...
