handlebar universal controls on K1100
« on: April 16, 2016, 04:45:56 PM »
Hi guys
Works proceed on the baby
Now, I must change the handlebar tomorrow and I will replace master cylindr of brake with a Brembo, and new clutch.
I need also to change the controls.
Somebody here had experience with it?
DO you have a "lesson for dummy" wher you can explain how attach the new controls?
I assumes i must attach to the wire, but could be something wrong?
Thanks
Gabriele

Can you be more specific?

Are you changing the standard BMW bars for some after market bars that are 7/8" diameter (instead of 22mm diameter)?
Are you deleting the BMW controls, both right hand and left hand, completely and replacing them with a generic Brembo radial master cylinder and some other manufacturer's clutch assembly?
What are the new handlebars?  Clip ons?  Flat-track?  Ape-hangers?

More details with your design intentions will help others to offer better advice to you.  Pictures will help a great deal.

Fanfart, help us understand your intentions in eliminating the stock controls. I have been through the elimination of controls and can speak to the interfaces between certain controls and bike function. RBM can give a seminar on the design interfaces. The starter button and clutch and starter relay are linked, and you should carefully study the wiring diagrams in the Liebrary of the forum. The handlebar controls can't be simply substituted with after-market.

I need to change also the commands cause right now the brake is part of the commands right?
I see a lot of person put domino or other aftermarkets stuff on K1100 and k100
So I think is not something impossible also is not easy :)

The Brembo master cylinder/brake lever is special. It's made for racing bikes, or for people who want their bikes to look like racing bikes, and is restricted to certain caliper/rotor setups. You need to contact Brembo to get exact instructions on mounting them to your bike.

You wrote "commands" but I understand that to mean "controls". Is that correct? The two words have different meanings in English.

I think you need to go to a motorcycle racing or cafe racer forum, too, where members are doing radical modifications like yours and are more likely to be familiar with the equipment you want and the methods to use.

Hi thanks for reply :)
The brembo I get is a special model fit on the k1100.
Is hyrbid and is 18 and 20 (the one we use)
Infact i need just to attach the cables of brake and purge the brakes that's all
I've do in other bike and is preatty easy.
For the controls 5i think or command :) i don't know reallyhow is called) as starter kill signal and hi beam i see the scheme and is pretty easy.
the only think couldn't work is to start the bike without pull the clutch but is fine
I've already get rapid gas, clutch and chocke
So now is just to sitting down really calm and see how put the things togheter.
But almost of the people I know with a modify K1100 or k100-75 had change the master cylinder and of course all the rest.
I will keep posted anyway cause could be interesting also for the forum see how install this kind of things.

Ranfart, I am interested to see additional pictures and how you connect the handlebar controls. If you could write up the process, it will be great.

Ok before begin this kind of "technical post" let me do a intro before (short)
I've always owned supersport bike and, due the age :D and the 130 km i do everyday with my r1200r in every season to go to work, i've choose a bmw.
After I find a k1100 for 750 euros and I've begin to think about a special :)
SO the first thing I needed, for my taste, was a new brake system, cause the original is really "fluffy" imho...also with abs.
For that i've make the decision to give a line more "aggressive" to the K.
As far i'm really happy about it.
Ok starting from the master cylinder, before choose handlebar or other stuff.
Our K need a 20 master cylinder due to number of piston and double disk system.
The only one with a great quality for a great price is the brembo 19RCS 18-20
http://www.carpimoto.it/it-BE/31895_110A26310-Pompa-Freno-Radiale-Anteriore-Brembo-19RCS.htm
The next step is get a handlebar give me a better position on the bike..this is like the shoes, everyone need a different thing.I've choose a TAG 22 of diameter with 28 at center.I've so also get rises of 28 for support the handlebar
I've installed everything pretty easy. The original handlebar is a little bit tricky to get off for the switch (was completely stuck) but with around 2 hours of pull and oil and pull :D i archieves the goal.
So i've bought a fast gas grip and a clutch, order a new clutch cable and for the choke i've get a universal one.Price of everything around 50 euros (gas clutch and choke).
For grip I bought some weeks ago for a great deal (20 euros new instead 80) 2 grips Rizoma Sportline in alluminum. One is already a fast gas so I've disassembly the other one and just keep the "shell".
Now the funny part :)
I wouldn't a "chip looking" switch cause I would to do a badass bike, so, i've choose Alpha Racing Superbike switch, normally mounted on the s1000r.
But also here i've get a great deal with a guy give me NEW the whole set of 5 buttons switch and 2 buttons switch and the start and kill switch, instead of almost 600 euros (real price) for 250 and with double set of buttons!
So i recreate the layout of k1100:signal right and stop signal on the right and in the same color of right signal the left signal. And I keep the same layout but with the yellow button on the left for abs :) (and there is also write abs...)
The switch are below in the picture..there is a old version of start and kill so...anyway you can see also on my picture.
Now I place all my stuff in the way i would.
I've get the original switch (2 used find on ebay) and I've cut the cable to connect the wires and uses the original cable and open the switchs.
Now as you see from pictires the woring is pretty easy. There is n the right switch the ground in common between signal righ and signal off, and in the left the ground in common between clacson and left signal
The other wires are

RIGHT

START black green-yellow black
KILL Green-Yellow Green
SIGNAL LEFT Yellow-Blue BROWN ground in common with SIGNAL OUT White Brown
LIGHT Blue Green
PARKING yellow white
HIGHLIGHTS White Blue
(for the lights i've used a normal kill switch with 2 positions, normal and highlights, instead of 3)

So i've get my Wago and do all the connections to see if the moto was explodes or not...
For the common ground on wago 3 connectors you mut put ground of signal left as first connector, ground in common on 2 and signal out on last connectors
The wago fo me is the best thing to do wiring on motorbike.Waterproof and antivibration.
I've do all my connections and put under the tank.
The great thing to have a system like this is if you want to change just open connectors and replace cable. And you can use the original plug..

Now on the left switch we have

SIGNAL LEFT Blue Brown BROWN ground in common with CLACSON Green
LIGHT OFF White
LIGHT ON yellow
PASS Yellow White
Do the trick also on the other buttons and voila.

Remember the buttons doesn't have a negative positive (at least the things of Alpha Racing) so work anyway.
Just if you want on off on other position :)

I hope I was clear

I've also a video but I will post in the next post :)
