Germany Winter Ride
« on: March 16, 2016, 05:17:12 PM »
Here’s a ride report from Germany:

The route: Weiden-Stuttgart-Black Forest-Landstuhl-Weiden: 1050 kilometers.
Basically, east Germany to France and back.  I spent less than 200km on the Autobahn, the rest was spent carving up Germany’s excellent B roads, which have 60mph speed limits and run through the towns and countryside.

Day One: Travelled from Weiden, near the Czech border, to Stuttgart where I visited the Mercedes Museum.  Pretty cool cars and lots of history.  I stayed there overnight at a hostel and dined on a calzone, though it didn’t hold a sauce next to a New York calzone.

Day Two: Travelled from Stuttgart to Freudenstadt and then took the B500 over a mountain pass to Baden Baden.  I was glad to have heated hand grips and my RS fairing because people were cross country skiing along the side of the road.  This was the first and only time I was glad that Germany over-salts its roads.
The roads cleared up on the western side of the pass and I was able to enjoy the famous Black Forest roads a bit.
After Baden Baden, I took off across the French border and skimmed through some small villages before popping back into Germany and reaching my destination of Landstuhl.  Not much to see there, I just had some business at the US Army base, where I stayed the night.

Day Three: I hit the Autobahn for about 175km before getting tired of the overly straight roads with high speed cars whizzing by.  I exited and found a spot to eat at Waldenburg Castle and then continued on through Rottenburg (great looking town) and drove through the famous roads in the Frankische Schweiz (Frankish Switzerland, because of the similar geo to the Swiss Alps) before getting back to Weiden.

Great trip!  Unfortunately, while turning the bike around on an incline in Baden Baden she tipped when my 5’7” frame couldn’t touch the ground on the decline side of the bike. The side case absorbed the blow so no damage done.  I guess I need some taller boots, or does the low-seat option for the K75 also fit on a RS?

And today on my way to work, the clutch cable snapped.  Good thing it didn’t happen a day earlier…

PS: My pictures aren't showing up so if someone knows how to insert them properly please PM me

Euro the low seat is applicable to all the 75's, I am the same height and had may seat shaved a lot less trouble, also cheaper and easier . You can also get lift inserts for your boots, but if you are buying new boots try the lifts in the prospective boots, as they do not fit all boots. I didn't think much of your pictures.

Martin,

I'll have to look at getting the seat shaved.  Did that reduce the comfort?  This is my touring bike so I need to be able to stay on the bike all day.

As for the photos, I clicked the "insert image" button and put the file path in between the two "img" brackets.  Not sure what the correct procedure is but I couldn't find anything in the help section of the site.

Below the box where you type your message you will see "Attachments and other options"

Click on it and a box opens.  Click "BROWSE"  and find the photo you want to add.   Double click the photo and it will appear in the attachment box.

To add more photos click on "(more attachments)"  And repeat.

Can't tell you how the insert image works, because I have never used it.

The Attachments and other options method works with images stored on your computer. The Insert Image method works when your images are stored on a photo sharing site like TinyPic, Imgur or Photobucket. When that's the case, the url of the photo on the photo sharing site is inserted between the two pairs of img brackets.

Didn't have a problem until lately when I lost a heap of weight mainly off my bum. I ended up buying a gel seat. But you can always go down the boot and lift track. I have ridden a K75 RT with a low seat and I found it a bit too low. See if you can get a sit on one or maybe a ride it would help you in deciding.

Martin,

Thanks for the tip.  I'd be willing to try out any options.  Is there any reason that the K75 low seat wouldn't fit on the K100?  If I could even get one more inch that would be great.  I'll be moving to Seattle in a few months, looking forward to meeting up with some Brick riders and maybe I can find someone with a low seat to try out.

The '90 K100RS low seat (sliding seat) is a different part number than the K75's low seat number. That may indicate incompatible fit. Compare the part number on the MAXBMW fiche for your K100RS with the similar part's number for the K75.

Hmmm.  I think it would take some different hardware to make it work.  And for the price, maybe a Corbin would be more comfortable and lower.  Anyone ride a Dual Sport Canyon that could comment on if it gives you some more reach vs the stock seat?

Germany's got to be the best Country in Europe for biking. I have bought 2 K100's there and a 100gspd there and toured and brought them home.  love the place. went from Ireland to Prague via the Black Forest following the Danube via ingoltsad , Ulm . I toured the Hartz mountains and all of the old DDR. when you ask a biker in Germany for directions they will escort you to your destination via the scenic route.  brilliant.

It's been great here, definitely going to miss it when I get back to the States.  My father in law has worked for BMW motorcycles for the past couple decades so I will always have a Brick waiting for me here whenever I visit!   :riding:
