Converting a 1986 Naked K100 To a RT
« on: December 30, 2015, 10:52:51 AM »
I have accumulated all the parts that I need to convert my 1986 Naked K100 with 13,000 miles to an RT.
Except for having to lengthen the horn wiring harness and the front signal lights harness everything is bolting up without any glitches.

Yes, I have a car lift, air compressor, mc lift, and a parts washer. My wife threatens to move my bed and TV there.

F14, maybe the plan is to build an RT and then chop it up.

Good one.

Donmystic1, that radiator shroud is a scarce and coveted item (in certain circles). Hope you find a good home for it.

Hi Don,

Over on BMWMOA, I noticed you were asking the same question about adding the RT fairing and observed the same cable length limitation.  One of the suggestions was to purchase wires of different colours to extend the harness, and try to get the same as stock.  Generally, that is a very difficult task to accomplish, but there are a couple of possible creative solutions that will help when extending the wiring, as you've mentioned you need to do.

1) purchase a very cheap harness from eBay to cannibalise.  They are our there.  You can choose one that's been damaged since you're going to cut up anyway for the wires.

2) Introduce the wire splice midway.  For any given wire that you intend to lengthen, clip the original wire partway down from the connector to expose 5" - 6" of wire lead on the connector.  Then strip both ends and solder in the lengthening splice.  The chosen wire can be of any colour but must be of the same gauge.  Use solder and shrink-wrap over each joint.  Try very hard to stagger splices so that the overall thickness of a group of wires remains small.  When finished, wrap up the cable with tape.  This method will mean you always have the correct wire colour at both ends.

Below is the best way to splice wires.

I like the idea of purchasing a junk harness on EBay and using the compatible color wires to extend my harness.
I use your techniques to splice the wires.
Thanks again for the input

Don,  I have a K75S wiring harness with relay box that I don't need.  Let me know which wires you need and I can check my harness for the correct colors.  If you are interested, make me an offer.  If you like, I can send the whole mess or just the sections you need.

Interesting, I'm converting my K11LT to a naked, I have located the front part of the radiator shroud but missing the side pieces or "wings".

I'm definitely interested in buying!
