K1100LT Project

A question (s). In a past conversations that I've had regarding my need to lower the LT (if I remember correctly). A suggestion was made to use a K1100RS rear wheel http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/DiagramsMain.aspx?vid=51713&rnd=03252011? Although it is a wider wheel, it is taller than the LT wheel http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/DiagramsMain.aspx?vid=51711&rnd=03252011, no? The same goes with the front wheel, no? Making the LT taller, not lower?

With the RS wheels you have a different tire selection available. You should be able to find a set of tires with a little shorter profile, thus(theoretically) giving you a lower seat height.

I have just put RS wheels on my LT and it is a good 20mm lower that is 3/4 in
It may be an 18in wheel as against a 17 on the LT but the tyre profile is much lower. I have even had to recalibrate my speedo so it doesn't read high.

What is tire size that you mounted up?  20 mm is a lot, that will change the geometry in a number of areas.
Both stands with consideration to ground clearance, layover in cornering, and the fork rake?   Did you slide the forks up in the trees to bring the front down too?   That would help to bring the rake back.   How does it handle on the road?

I've always been a bit confused with the RS-LT wheel size issue.

LT has 18" front and 17" rear
RS has 17" front and 18" rear

Never understood why BMW didn't just stick with one setup or the other.

I put the RS wheels on because I wanted good radials but as for clearance I havent put it on the road yet after a rebuild and won't be for a while . I have just found I need some complicated surgery on the left wrist so it won't become useless in a few years so I am out of action riding wise for 3 or so months.
Not sure but maybe the RS has longer shock to make up the difference. There is almost 40mm in the rear dia and 32 on the front over standard LT.

Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

My math must be off... Aspect ratio(mm) / 25.4 = aspect ratio  inches + wheel hight

Possibly the LT wheel had a larger dia tire on it.  It was a 140x80x17 and the RS wheel a 160x60x18 which is standard both with new tires.

There's several tire size calculators on the Internet.  Try them and you'll discover that the difference in the diameter is about 2/3".  The difference in height is the radius which is about half of that.

The difference is minimal due to the difference in aspect ratios.
