Recommendations for spline lube?
« on: September 05, 2013, 07:31:22 AM »
Did a search for Spline lube here,.....nothing came up.  So, Looking for recommendations.  I've read about Paul Glave's mix of Wurth Sig 3000 ($27 plus shipping) and Honda 60 Moly spline lube ($13).

What is the current thinking on this?

Driveshaft splines the Honda Moly will work fine.

Clutch splines most BMW mechanics recommend Staburags NBU 30 and you can extend the service interval to 40k. It apparently has a little more stickum then Honda Molly and not as prone to slinging out. Hard to find in the US.

I just did both clutch and shaft using the Honda Moly I'll be servicing them again in 20k and will source the Staburags NBU 30 before then.

I will disagree with the Honda-moly recommendation.  I have a tube and used it on my 1st spline lube.  :dunno

When after a couple of months the downshifting became more difficult.  When I tore into it again all the Honda Moly was slung off.

Upon looking around I found the recommendation for a product called Guard Dog Moly.  I used it on my second go around and I'm very pleased.  Probably a year or so later and still shifting like butter.

Compared to the HM, the GD is really tacky and super slick.  It's kind of hard to find, but it's worth finding, IMHO.

I've been using Optimol Paste TA which was recommended to me at the BMW dealer's shop. No complaints here.
