K Bikes Look Costly

I was chatting with a Honda Davidson owner this morning. He was thinking that my K75 was a $25,000 dollar bike! Anyone else ever come across something like this?

His bike was 50k. Even the new bmw's are cheaper than harleys.

I met a couple of riding buddies on Saturday morning; it was the first time they had seen my K75S.  :k75s

They spent 20 minutes looking at it, poking at it, getting on and off of it. One commented that if he didn't know it was 25 years old, and didn't see the narrow tires, he would think it was a modern bike. Given that the K75S was up to around $9,000 new in the early '90s, if it was still being produced, I think it would go for $20K or more today.

One of the first things I did when I bought my K1100rs in August 2011 ($1700) was to look up an old road test to see what it retailed for in 1993, the year of its birth. Right around $15k. There's no way on God's Green Earth that I would have had either the ability or the inclination to part with that kind of money then or now for a vehicle that's useful maybe eight months out of the year.

All of the motorcycles I've owned up to this point when the purchase prices were added together wouldn't equal half of that figure. And two of them - a 1977 Suzuki GS400 and a 1978 Honda CX500 - were bought brand new.

BMW was traditionally a more expensive motorcycle but built to a higher quality level. I remember reading a test of the 1974 R90. That bike retailed for if I recall correctly $4800. At that time though it wasn't at all unusual to see an airhead with 75k + miles.

The other thing with BMW is they provide long term support to the bikes, as does Harley, and to a slightly lesser extent, Guzzi and Ducati, where the aftermarket picks up the slack. 

Try to get a part for a 20 year old Honda. And Honda is better than some. A BMW is a lifetime bike. They are worth rebuilding (especially with the airheads, where a used engine is not 300 bucks).

I would agree with you on the parts, I have a whole fleet of bikes, can't hardly get parts for my 1982 XT 550, althought Bike Bandit has some, but my 89 K100RS parts are everywhere.

And I agree some companies provide longer term suppor, but i still can't buy parts for my 1918 Harley from teh dealer, funny?   :hehehe

I was ordering some gaskets from Bob's BMW the other day and I said that I was glad that they had parts in stock for my 25-year-old bike. He said they get calls daily for parts for older bikes, very often going back to the 1960s and they either have them in stock there at the dealership or the parts are in their warehouse.

Took my 87 K100RS (pearl white) to a local Kawa, Yama, Honda dealer for the state safety inspection.  The owner came out to look at my bike and was astonished at the mileage.  Only 85K!  He said he'd never seen one before and remarked at the size of the engine.  He took if for a spin and came back with a HUGE smile.  His best remark was "that bike has personality"!!  yes she does!

I got the exact opposite. I got told my bike was ancient and that i should get something newer ... like an R6. I guess the only way to be cool is to get a bike that shatters if someone knocks it over in a parking lot.
