BMW OEM Multivario Tank Bag Basics
« on: November 29, 2012, 12:13:25 PM »
Aside from the very early K100 tank bags, there are essentially two styles of BMW tank bags. The significant difference between these two styles is how their bases attach to the tank.

K75 (all models) and K100 (all models including the K100RS4V). This style has metal hooks at the ends of the straps that go over the seam at the bottom of the tank. The base is imprinted with what models this base will fit on.

K1, K1100RS and K1100LT.  This style has brackets on each side of the tank that bolt to the tangs coming down from the sides of the tank and the straps on the tank bag base hook over those brackets. The base is imprinted with what models this base will fit on.

The mounting bracket part numbers are 71602304456(left) and 71602304457(right.)

CAUTION:  Although the top sections are basically the same, these tank bags and bases can have different zippers so your best bet to ensure base-bag compatibility is to buy the tank bag and base together.  For example, I have  two (supposedly identical) K1100 tank bags and bases that are not cross-compatible due to their different zippers between the base and bottom of the bag.

Rain Cover: The rain cover (part 71607677284) is the same for all of these Multivario tank bags

What is the strap that goes around the bag for? A shoulder strap for carrying?

The strap is a good place to attach additional pouches made for belts, like small point-and-shoot camera or phone carriers.

Also worth noting about the Multivario bag is that the middle of the three sections can be removed entirely, and the top section will zip-connect to the bottom section.

The bag is not waterproof and is barely water resistant.

The rain cover is waterproof but it attaches poorly with snaps. At speed the rain cover fills up with air and can even become unattached. I've had to use a bungee cord wrapped around the circumference of the rain-covered bag to keep it manageable.

would be fine to know how to install them after brackets arrive.

The same mounting tabs on the fuel tank as the ones for the battery covers is used.

Thanks - but it's K 1100 RS, not LT - battery covers are attached differently

OK I figure out that, but how do I attach these? That's why I was asking for a pic showing it (which were removed):

Do I need these rubber pieces (which I needed on my old K 100 LT for the side panels) or not ??? I think they are used for attaching K 1100 LT side panels too, but on K 1100 RS not.

I'll try and upload the pic's shortly. I have a pic of the brackets installed.
Photobucket dropped all of their free file sharing this last week so there will be a lot of dead photos. Which is what happened with these photos.

Noted, this is on an 1100LT.

But where did the other bracket come from, the one between tank bag brackets and the frame???

Well, they are specific to the 1100LT's..... they are not used on the 1100RS's.

But do they come with the bike, or they can be bought separately - if yes, what is the part no. (if you know it)?

I am thinking of getting the LT's side panels and replacing the original ones on my RS. One of the reasons: LT's have that pin in the middle which goes into the rubber piece (like it used to be on K 100 models), and it holds the side panels much more firmly.

I noticed UK's Motorworks sell just the left-side bracket, while right-side one is not offered anymore.

But to me they look identical - can the left-side bracket (with some adjustment) be used on the right side???

If the price is cheap enough get 2 and let us know.....  :dunno2:
I think they are the same, unlike the bag clips that are directional.

I found them both at of Italian eBay shop "Motoricambi" (motorcycle spare parts). The edges are bent differently on left and right one - like viewed in the mirror. But I guess if that edge on the left one would be removed with an electric grind tool it could be used on the right side - and vice versa. If tightened well, I guess they would not turn even if that edge is not present
