Hard Case Hinge Replacement
« on: May 30, 2012, 03:29:56 PM »
Duck asked me to post this awhile ago, so here goes:

Busted Hard Case Hinges? No problem, go to this fiche on Bike Bandit - http://www.bikebandit.com/1992-bmw-k75/o/m82#sch352509
or simply order this part#: 376260

Pry the old busted ones off the small plastic studs that hold them on the case like this,

Then push them off the rest of the way with a drift or big nail and hammer like this.

Slide the new ones on...

Until they click into place.

Done Deal.

Thanks for posting this.

Th BMW part # for the hinges is 46542300039.  There are  two per side.

FYI: I find that a 1" chisel is a good tool for sliding them off with some light taps from a hammer.

This thread caught my eye. The previous owner of my bags cobbled one back together with a couple hardware store hinges. Little did he (or me) know they are a $5 piece from the Bandit!

BTW, the part number is 376154 if I'm reading the fiche properly.

My first set of hinges failed while on a trip.  Since then I carry 2 spare hinges with me all the time.

Replaced mine with hardware store hinges 20 years ago.  Don't need to carry spares.  Face it, some BMW OEM parts are failures waiting to happen.

I carry a couple spare hinges in one of the pockets in my case liners.  I had to replace one when I dropped my K75RT on a muddy Nebraska road a couple years ago.  Took about 10 minutes on the side of the road to change it.  I like to think that the hinge breaking saved the case when the bike landed on it.

Considering that these $6 hinges probably have nearly 25 or more years on them, and a couple thousand cycles, I can't really complain when one of them fails.

I think I used 1 1/2" or 2", just drilled holes and bolted them on.  Pop rivets would work too.  Same deal with the pot metal latches.

That must also explain the sacrificial mirrors and turn signal lenses BMW is so fond of

I've replaced one complete set in twenty years. And mine have always given me warning of the impending disaster by one hinge always starting to split first. I only had to replace one side late last year. And I should carry spares, and I will get around to it eventually. :dunno

Hmm... $4 for a pair of hardware store hinges that will last ages, or $6 a pop for something that'll go south in a year or two of regular use. Guess I'll be heading to Ace soon. I like the pop rivet option.

I bought my 91 K100LT new in 91 and I have only replaced one set of hinges.  I do carry a spare set in the bags but I have never needed them.  I wouldn't consider them to be a once every year or two by any means.

Glad I found this thread. The outer shell on my left case fell off when I opened it on Monday. Thought I’d have to replace the whole thing but no. They’re up to about $8 per hinge now.

A couple of people have 3D printed tragkorb hinges. One was an OEM copy and one was a modular multi part hinge with a bolt as a pivot. However as per a lot of Brick owners I'll stick with the OEM as they lasted well over 20 years the first set and I now carry a spare pair.

I bought a set of replacements when I first got my '91 R100RT because I was unimpressed with what I thought were flimsy hinges that would fail at any time.  40k miles later those are still working fine.

A slide into a ditch with my '93 K75 caused the case cover to detach because of the sacrificial hinges saving the case as a whole.  I did have to replace the lock at the bottom but new hinges and lock brought it back to regular use.
