For the more mechanical minded with basic metal tools you can get the specs for the valve tools from:

http://home.jtan.com/~joe/bmw_valve_tools_2.pdf

I found it easy to follow the only thing is you need to scale the drawing I used my company's photo copier.

Thanks, Martin.

I bought my tools from polepenhollow@yahoo.com—no problem.

Regarding shims, not to hijack this thread, but since the main issue with them is closing of the exhaust gap, what is the reason for not lapping a few thousandths off of the shim to open things up.

As long as you lap only one side of the shim, the other side is still hardened. In this video, a guy uses that technique.

I am in the process of doing my first valve check/adjustment (after all these years).  First Kens tools work perfectly and I got them fast.  They went up to $30 it's a good deal.

I can not believe how dirt simple checking the valves is.  All 3 of my exhaust valves were tight (about 150K miles on the bike). Had to order 3 shims.

Got them from https://newmotorcycleparts.net/motor_parts/valve_shims.html

$5.95 each plus shipping ($6.00 for me)  They should be here Friday and I'll get them put in..

CHECK YOUR VALVES!  It's dirt simple!

I just hope I did in time #3 was very tight.

Adding a supplier for all you UK and Euro brickers who pay in Euros -- Tills.de has valve tools and gauges at a good price.
