Cleaning Brake Reservoir
« on: March 05, 2018, 01:24:08 AM »
My front reservoir is filthy! I have the brake line removed as I will be replacing it. Can I spray brake cleaner or isopropyl alcohol into here and pump it out with the lever?

Obviously when the new brake line is in I will give it a good flush with new brake fluid.

I’m sure you can get yours looking almost like new with enough elbow grease.

This is mine. I debated spending an hour or more and a $5 can of brake cleaner to clean it. Then I spent less than $20 on a new one from BikeBandit. But I’m rebuilding a K that sat for 20 years so I have my plate full. Everyone has their own $ vs time scale.  [emoji4][emoji106]

Use cotton bud to get the gunk out and clean and flush with brake fluid. If you value your paintwork don't get any brake fluid on it. Make sure the compensating port as viewed from looking down into the reservoir is clear.

So in other words don't send anything down through the port in the bottom where possible (clean it all from the top side)?

I would be easier to clean if you remove it from the bike.

It's a screw from the underside by the red circle.
It's a o-ring around the outlet stub.

Cover painted parts when removing the reservoir.
Could be that you would need a new o-ring.

I wouldn't send any cleaners through the brake system, no guarantee it will all get flushed out.  Getting reservoir 100% clean would be more for esthetics, i just use paper towels and q tips.

I would clean the rest as well! My reservoir looked Like that - but both the Master cylinder and calibers was filled with yellow goo!!
I just tossed everything in a bucket with very warm water and some Good industrial cleaner. All the plastic parts Can be made to look almost new - even though they are + 30 years... incredible quality!!

Which industrial cleaner did you use, Enfield?

Something called “ Maxi 3”. Think it is a Danish product. Good for removing Oil etc - but doesn’t harm plastic or rubber.
