Note the suits and ties, aka riding gear.

I find that transformation in clothing norms interesting. I have some home-handyman books and magazines that date from the twenties and thirties showing guys operating saws and other home workshop machinery dressed similarly. Ties, vests, sport coats...

My great uncle was a house painter back in the 1930's. Every morning he would put on his suit and tie, go to work, change into work clothes, and at the end of the day change back and come home.

In the 80's I was working in a foundry in Oregon. We had a guy who showed up for work in a 3 piece suit every day and worked on the shop floor. He folded his jacket over his chair and then worked in a dress shirt, tie, vest and dress pants. He would pull molds out of a furnace at 1400 degrees and pour 2100 degree metal into it. Never broke a sweat. I think he was really an android or something. :yow

My grandmother (born 1903) only wore dresses. Below the knee, of course. Living in Alaska, the only time I saw her wear pants was when it was 20 below or colder. She had one pair of black wool pants, everything else she owned were dresses.
