93 K75S in SC, USA
« on: December 25, 2020, 04:18:51 PM »
Hi,

Been crawling around the site and thought I’d join up.
Just got a new-to-me 1993 K75S after casually looking for one for ~30 years.
I am located in the South Carolina Midlands.

I look forward to leaving more than I take!

Thanks,

Jeff

Thanks for the photo. That's a nice specimen. Tell us about it. Did you win it with a coin flip or in a marathon tonk session? What's the mileage?

Well, like I said, I had always been sorta’ looking for one for about 30 years. I felt that when the time was right and the right one came along, I’d snap it up. So, no coins or cards. It is a VERY clean 93 with 38k miles. The photos looked like it was original and unmolested, so I bought it from several states over and had it shipped —arriving last weekend. The bike did not disappoint with the only real change being a Corbin, which I likely would have done anyway. I’ve spent the week cleaning and redoing a few things like removing the old hard wired comms and adding extra switched (and non-switched) Powerlets. The only problem to work through is that it is a bit off with cold starts. It idles too low and tends to stall at first twist until warm. Fuel filter, injectors, and the TPS are on the check list.

Welcome!  Looks like you got a real nice one!  I like that red.  Very fast.

Check the crankcase breather tube(a.k.a. "Z" tube) it's on the left side behind the throttle position switch and runs from a stub on the engine block just in front of the battery box to the lower rear of the air box.

Those hoses are known to crack near the hose clamps and leak air.  The cracks can be almost invisible, but still mess up the mixture.

A complete fluid change is mandatory, including the coolant and brakes as well as a spline lube on the drive shaft.  Not a bad idea to pull the transmission back a couple inches and put a little lube on the clutch splines as well.

My experience with rear brake master cylinders makes me suspect yours is not going to work.  The good new is that there is a thread here on replacing it with a much better ChiCom unit for about $14.

I'll second the Z-tube! Cheap to buy and not terribly difficult to replace, even with bear paws for hands. You'd be surprised how much it can wreak havoc on idle.

To check if the fuel mixture is correct warm the bike up and set the idle at 1000 RPM. Then press the green starter button, above 1000RPM the starter will not engage. When pressing the button the idle should remain the same or rise slightly, if it rises significantly the mixture is lean if it drops it's too rich. If it needs to be adjusted you can either use the lean drop method or use an exhaust gas analyser. Using Search and entering
lean drop method will give you the details.

Probably wishful thinking, but I'm going to do it again. I'm hoping u haven't turned the "choke" switch on. Unlike the modern ones, this early version of fuel injection doesn't automatically adjust idle speed when cold, so maybe turn it to its first position. If that's the case, there is possibly nothing wrong with your brick.

All,

My apologies for the delay in responding!

The bike is just fine. The gas was a little stale after sitting for a while. It runs out beautifully with some fresh gas.

Thanks!

Very nice!  You've come to the right place for info on repairing and maintaining your brick.

How are the tires?  I ask because if you are going to replace them it would be a good time for a spline lube.

Hi,

The tires are brand new. Splines are lubed. Everything was done. The bike is basically new ... my ~30 years of casually window shopping for a K75S made this the one. That said, it won’t be staying as I just don’t fit on it. Oh well, I thought I still had the same body from back then! 🤪

Regards,

Jeff

Huh?!

I just don’t fit on it like I used to. Too cramped for this broken old body.

That reminds me of how I felt when I returned to riding after about a 25 year break.  I persisted for a bit which shook the cobwebs out of my body,  then I felt fitter, trimmer, and re energised. Plus after a ride you'll then just be left with a good feeling. I know I'm not the only one who gets this from riding.

You're in a great state for riding to boot.
