2 BMW motos, same year, so different.
« on: March 24, 2020, 10:51:26 AM »
These are so different that I can't believe they were made by the same outfit. both 94's. Well, the 3 spoke rims look similar, butts I'm liking the radials on red.

I felt the same way about the Tacoma and the Prius.  :laughing4-giggles:

How does the R perform at low speed—any noticeable surging?

no, but it has a Dobeck TFI fuel injection module installed, so I guess it tamed the surging.

You tell em BeeM, and remind him the Wrights used a flat inline triple to change the world forever.

I have only tried a friend's R70 but soon I hope try a R1200S that specs 132BHP. It's come a long way from the 1930s

Two Beasts with two totally different attitudes. The K is butter smooth and loves the twisty windy roads here in WV in lower gears regardless of RPM. The OilHead  ('02) is my latest addition and I bought it to cruise long distance. Low RPMs not so much fun but it loves the highway and anything above 3500 RPM. Both transmissions shift like shit (compared to my 13 Thunderbird which has the most crisp, responsive transmission I have ever ridden). Two bikes, two different riding characteristics. If all three bikes were brand new and I had to choose only one, it would be the K. It gives me the biggest smile when I ride it every single time. I only wish I could have afforded it when it was new.

I hear ya. I miss the smoothness of the 75, but really like the addl power of the R1100. It does vibrate more, but not too bad, nothing like a Hardly. The sweet spot on mine seems to be 4000 rpm. I've just bought some Pirelli Angel GT and am going to get them installed today to replace the 10 year old Michellins. I'm getting used to the shifting, each bike has little differences and I can shift pretty smoothly, but I miss the gear indicator mine doesn't have.

I love the looks of those R bikes.   I don't need another old BMW I can't maintain, so I am glad the pandemic is keeping me out of chicago or I probably would have snatched this beauty up. https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/mcy/d/chicago-1982-bmw-r100rt/7099851989.html

As far as shifting, I've found that minimum clutch seems to be the trick to smooth shifts.

With everything adjusted correctly, I found that flicking the clutch lever about 1-2cm makes the transmission almost shift itself with a light touch on the shifter.   The only time I miss shifts is when I'm pulling the lever over half way in.

My theory is that the input shaft stops or slows way down when the clutch is disengaged completely, and that makes sliding the gears harder, a little spin on that shaft and everything moves around in there easily.

I also put a tablespoon of molybdenum disulfide powder in the transmission oil, and that seems to make the forks follow the grooves in the drum easier.

I had a 70's boxer with the pinstriped windjammer fairing in a metallic brown. that was a very nice looking bike. ran great and easy to maintain too.

That's interesting, just looked it up. A few times I looked for another example of a horizontal inline engine,  but found none, other than bricks.  Did see a bus engine almost horizontal but a few degrees off. Are there any others?

Yes, the boxer twins and bricks each have their own personalities, never ridden a telelever model though.

I like to ride them both but find the airheads easier to maintain than the later twins.  I've done an Ironbutt ride on the R100RT and an 850 mile day on the K75 (back from the MOA last year).
