I put a full johnny blanket on the '85 this year and it helps keep the tank much cooler.

If you havn't had your brick long,  and it was parked by the previous owner, just riding 1000miles could help.  Also flush and replace the coolant, and a good service.

Check that there are no bubbles in the coolant and that the expansion tank level rises and falls, after and before a trip.
