K1100LT Highline goes into rehab after 9-Years of being ignored
« on: September 10, 2019, 04:36:39 PM »
After 4 years of living without a bike and me dreaming big dreams of owning a K100, with that sexy weird and unconventional motor I happened to drive by this gem.  A 97' K1100 with 43199 miles on it. I didn't know much about these bikes and I only just now know a little bit more but I figured a brick is a brick and this one appealed to me well enough the more I've learned the happier I am with my choice.  Based on the last inspection sticker I would say its sat idle for 8-9 years. It has fluid in the tank pretty sure its not gasoline anymore.  Crude around the front brake master cylinder.  Hard and dried out tires and just a general funky smell about it.  I'm sure I will find a lot more as I dig in further and I believe I found the right group to lean on in my times of need. fortunately the bike came with the factory service manual and a Haynes manual so I have some hard copy reference materials as well.

I'm not sure how much I will post this journey as I come across topics that seem to not have been touched on or were down deep in the forum that I feel need digging up to keep current or relevant.  I guess to put it another way I don't know what I don't know yet so maybe by chronicling this process someone will catch something before I make a mistake.

My first step will be to something many of us have had to deal with and that's to make space in the Garage to start work.
Then I'm going to start pulling this thing apart to see what there is to see. Clean the fuel system replace the fluids and lubricants many of which I'm sure are now tar and varnish.
the only things I can tell for certain it needs is a new battery and new tires but I'm sure that list is going to grow quickly
My goal is to break it out in the spring.

At first I figured I would get a Brick and tear it apart and make it Naked but now I'm thinking I'm just going to get it operating in tip top shape and keep it about as it is and save the chopping and hacking for my first moto project that you may end up spotting in the garage as well on occasion since they will have to get along and share the space.

So I guess let the chronicling begin,

What a gorgeous color!  Welcome to the asylum!  I started a very similar project chronicled in the project classic Morobrick section titled K1100 resto under a grand.  I’ll watch your progress, pm me anytime.  Clayton.

The front MC looked the same (dripping crystals) when I got mine, pitted the rightside fairing as it was neglected for years. Easy fix, and did a two-fer by rebuilding the MC (bought parts from Motobins) and bleeding/checking the front lines at the same time. Have fun!

Removed the dead battery and in the process found that most of my wire jacket, loom covering whatever ya wanna call it is soft and kinda crumbles apart easily. I guess add fixing my wiring harness goes on the list as I am noticing it everywhere.  Is this normal with BMW. I hadn’t seen this on my past Japanese bike projects

Seems like my motor is covered in copious amounts of oil and had been while it was being operated back in the day I’m thinking.

Is it normal to have a ground cable attached to ones engine protection bars ?

Good news is the brake fluid crystals didn’t seem to damage the paint on the fuel tank

Hmmm posting with an iPhone seems to do wacky things here like rotate photos upside down

Here is one among many explanations for that phenomenon. If you post using the Gallery feature here, they can be rotated before posting.
