RT/LT/RS Rear View Mirrors - Mirror Glass Removal
« on: May 06, 2012, 11:03:06 AM »
At some point in time you may want to remove the mirror glass from an RT/LT/RS mirror for painting or whatever.  Fold a towel over once on a hard flat surface.  Then SLAM the mirror down (mirror glass side down) and the mirror glass will pop out.  If it doesn't then SLAM the mirror down harder.

Here's a YouTube demonstrating the technique. (The one in this video clip comes out pretty easily.  Usually you need to slam the mirror down pretty hard to get the glass to pop out.)

Dug a hole and covered him up
Now I sit there by the hour

I've removed the glass from my RT mirror housings twice now using that technique.

On my mirrors, the glass doesn't come out unless you slam it down hard enough to crack the housing. :dunno2:

OK, simple enough.
I've read your other post about having an auto glass company cut a new mirror. How does one attach the new glass? The factory manual says nothing about this (a search function in the PDF might help.)

Your local hardware store or glazier will have glue specific for mirrors. Or heavy duty double sided tape.

I made a tool from a wire coat hanger to get my mirror glass out, that worked fine. Just a little hook that fits in between the glass and the shell. Then used bathroom silicone sealant to glue a new mirror glass on top of the remains of the old one.

I used a bent 6" screwdriver to slide in behind the glass and pop it out.
Tried the slam method, but didn't work for me, maybe carpet was too thick...

Some pics at the link below to show the screwdriver and my angle of approach

I've tried the slam method and it didn't work for me. I think because the plastic is so old and dry, but also because any harder and I was worried something may break. After I pried a broken mirror out using a screwdriver and saw what the connection looked like, using a tie-down strap - worked top to bottom on both sides of the mirror, allowed for an easy pull.

On my 91 K100RS, there appears to be clip holding the mirror in place.

Yes the K100RS has a small retainer clip which you can remove by taking off the indicator lens first to get to it
